Lady Lions Struggle at Boneyard Brawl

The Lindenwood volleyball team stumbled to a 1-3 finish at the Boneyard Brawl this weekend in Georgetown, Kentucky. The Lady Lions swept the University of Mobile (Ala.), 25-22, 25-23, 25-19, to begin the day, but lost to No. 16 Indiana Institute of Technology, 25-20, 25-18, 13-25, 25-20, in the tournament finale.

The Lady Lions bounced back from a disappointing Friday by dispatching of Mobile rather quickly. Krista Yoder and Ellen Fandry paced the team with nine kills apiece. Kelsey Biggs netted 27 assists and Alyssa Showers had a team high 15 digs. Victoria Krause and Yoder each recorded five blocks.

Facing their second ranked opponent of the tournament, the Lady Lions fell behind to Indiana Institute of Technology early, and never recovered. Fandry led the team with 12 kills. Yoder and Krause each tallied 11. Biggs contributed with 36 assists and added two aces. Defensively, Showers recorded 25 digs and Kelsey Jo Vogler and Yoder totaled seven blocks apiece.

The Lady Lions opened the tournament on Friday with a 20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 13-15 loss to Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) before being swept by nationally ranked Georgetown (Ky.), 11-25, 13-25, 20-25.

After dropping the first set, the Lady Lions responded by taking the next two, but failed to close the door against Freed-Hardeman. Ellen Fandry led the team with 16 kills and five blocks. She also had a team high two aces. Yoder tallied 15 kills, Krause had 14 and Kelsey Kennedy added 12. Showers had a season high 36 digs, and Biggs also netted a season best, 59 assists. Biggs also chipped in with 18 digs.

Lindenwood never threatened Georgetown and fell to 2-7 in matches this year against opponents ranked in the NAIA Top 25. Vogler tallied six kills and Showers totaled 14 digs for the Lady Lions.

Lindenwood (27-11, 9-0) will wrap up the regular season this Tuesday against Evangel. The match is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. in St. Charles.
