The 20th ranked Lindenwood women's volleyball team wrapped up a second place finish at the Graceland Tournament this weekend. The Lady Lions fell in the championship match to fourth ranked Columbia College, 3-0. Lindenwood breezed to the championship match defeating South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and Jamestown (N.D.) in pool play, before knocking off 19th ranked Taylor (Ind.) in the semifinals.
In the opening match, Lindenwood used a furious rally in the fourth set to defeat South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, 3-1, by scores of 25-22, 25-18, 24-26, 27-25. The Lady Lions trailed 9-19 at one point in the final game, but rallied, scoring the next 11 points to even the score. From there the two teams traded points before Lindenwood took control for good. Victoria Krause paced the attack with 16 kills and Ellen Fandry added 10. Alyssa Showers and Kelsey Biggs contributed with 13 digs apiece. Biggs also had 37 assists from her setter position. Up front, Kelsey Jo Vogler recorded eight blocks and Krause added five.
In the second match, Lindenwood used a big performance from Showers to sweep Jamestown (N.D.), 3-0, by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 25-23. Showers had 21 digs, a season high for the junior libero. Fandry led the team with 11 kills and Erin Anselman added nine. Biggs netted 33 assists. The sophomore has led the team in assists in all 11 games so far. Krista Yoder recorded 4 blocks. Patricia Erb and Fandry tallied two service aces each.
On Saturday, Lindenwood knocked off No. 19 Taylor (Ind.), 3-1, by scores of 22-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-16. Fandry paced the attack with 20 kills, Krause had 13 and Anselman added 10. Showers led the team in digs with 16. Biggs had 14 digs to go along with 49 assists. Krause netted four blocks up front.
In the championship match, the Lady Lions were swept by Columbia College for the second time in the last week, losing 19-25, 22-25, 12-25. Yoder and Fandry each had nine kills. Biggs recorded 27 assists. Showers added 20 digs and Yoder had three blocks.
Victoria Krause and Alyssa Showers were named to the All-Tournament team.
The No. 20 Lady Lions (10-3, 1-0) will return home to face William Woods on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
