Softball Splits Its Season Opener Against Olivet Nazarene

The Lindenwood softball team split its season opening doubleheader on Saturday at the Lou Brock Sports Complex. Visiting Olivet Nazarene took the first game by a 4-2 score, but the Lady Lions roared back to take the second contest by a 2-0 margin.

In the opener, one bad fielding decision by Lindenwood and a timely hit by the Tigers was the difference in the game.

Olivet Nazarene got on the board in the second inning with three straight two-out hits. A double got the rally started and the next batter singled to center. The throw home missed the cutoff person, allowing the Tiger runner to get to second. That proved to be big as she scored after another single.

Lindenwood got one run back in the bottom half of the inning when Jacqueline Riordan singled, stole second, and then scored on Danielle Merli's single.

Neither team scored again until the seventh inning. The Tigers had runners on third and second and came up with another big two out hit, this one falling just out of the reach of three fielders down the first base line.

Those runs turned out to be the difference after Lindenwood rallied in its final at-bat. Sophie Berman scored on a RBI single by Sophia Galati, and that brought the go-ahead run to the plate with one out. A strikeout and caught stealing got Olivet Nazarene out of the threat.

Rebecca Peddicord took the loss despite throwing a complete game. She allowed nine hits, walked two, and struck out nine.

The second game was all about Aubrey Moss for Lindenwood. The junior pitcher threw a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and one walk, and striking out 12. She only was in danger one time, as an error, hit batter, and single loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning. Moss struck out two straight hitters looking to get out of the jam.

Lindenwood scored a single run in both the first and fourth innings. In the first, Jessica Long helped manufacture a run with two out with a steal, advancing to third on a passed ball, and scoring on a hit by Berman. In the fourth, Miranda Schlosser led off the inning with a double and touched home plate on a groundout by Caitlin Diesen.

Lindenwood is in action again tomorrow against Indiana Institute of Technology, with the doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
