After failing to record a road victory in its first seven tries, the Lindenwood softball team broke through Tuesday afternoon, sweeping Culver-Stockton in Canton, Mo. by scores of 3-2 and 10-2.
In game one, Culver-Stockton grabbed an early 1-0 lead after the first, and starter Katie Thomas pitched around trouble in the second and third to keep Lindenwood off the board. In the fourth, however, the Lady Lions got on the scoreboard.
Macy Bross walked to lead off the inning, and two batters later moved into scoring position on a
Miranda Schlosser single. Moments later,
Caitlin Diesen singled to center field, driving in Bross.
The Lady Wildcats responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame, and the score would remain 2-1 until the late.
Danielle Merli lead the seventh off with a single, and after stealing second, moved to third on
Jessica Long's second hit of the game. A wild pitch scored Merli shortly after, and Long scored on a Bross RBI groundout.
Rebecca Peddicord retired the side in order in the bottom part of the inning to cap the come from behind win. The victory marked the first time this season Lindenwood won when trailing after six innings.
Peddicord earned her second consecutive win, striking out two and walking one. She pitched the final five innings of the game after starter
Heidi Schertzer was removed in the third.
Game two was the complete opposite of game one. Lindenwood jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning, and added another run in the fifth.
In the sixth, the Lady Lions erupted for six runs to push the lead to 10-1. Diesen drove in a pair of runs in the big inning, and
Emily Johnson had a two out, bases clearing double that slammed the door shut.
The Lady Wildcats got one run back in the bottom of the sixth, but could not extend the game into the seventh.
Aubrey Moss got the win, striking out nine and walking none in six innings of work.
Sophia Galati posted three RBIs and Long added two more in the victory. The Lady Lions posted 13 hits in the process, including four that were for extra bases.
Lindenwood (16-16, 8-2) will host William Jewell on Thursday at 3 p.m.
