The Lindenwood women's volleyball team came out swinging at the Washington University Invitational as the Lady Lions finished 2-0 to wrap up day one of the tournament. The Lady Lions swept Culver Stockton in their first match of the evening and ended the night defeating Millikin in four sets.
Lindenwood dominated its first match defeating the Cougars by scores of 25-11, 25-14, and 25-21. In the first set the Lady Lions hit .500 connecting on 13 of 26 kills. On the defensive side, the women's team recorded 16 blocks and 46 digs as the Lady Lions were able to sweep Culver Stockton.
Offensively,
Kristy Dreisewerd and
Sydney Reale led the team with identical kills posting seven each. Dreisewerd posted four blocks along with
Kelsey Jo Vogler who posted four as well.
Emma Brydels also contributed six kills on 13 attempts, with a team-high of 19 assists.
Kelsey Biggs finished the match with 11 assists.
The Lady Lions continued to impress on defense with
Kaila Schrimpf tallying 14 digs while
Erin Anselman recorded 12.
Lindenwood dropped a set in the second match of the night but went on to defeat Millikin 25-11, 25-27, 27-25, and 25-23. The Lady Lions were up 15-11 in the first set and never looked back. The Big Blue were unable to catch up as Lindenwood when on a 10-0 run to take set one 25-11. The Lady Lions struggled in the second set as they committed 11 hitting errors to let set two slip away in Millikin's favor 27-25.
In set three, Lindenwood made fewer mistakes than before. With game point on the line at 23-24, momentum shifted as the Lady Lions tied the game with a setting error by Millikin. Lindenwood would take the lead in the series 2-1 after a block by
Katie Weber. The fourth set started off all Lindenwood as
Angela Cichelero went on a serving run to put the Lady Lions up 12-3. The Big Blue attempted to battle back but Lindenwood shut them down and won 25-23.
Dreisewerd led the Lady Lions with 14 kills, followed by Weber with 11 and Anselman with 10. Both Lindenwood setters recorded double-doubles with Brydels posting 29 assists with 12 digs while Biggs contributed 16 assists with 14 digs. Defensively, Schrimpf tallied 28 digs while Weber had her hand in a team-high of five blocks.
Lindenwood improves its record to 12-8 on the season after going undefeated in day one of the Washington University Invitational. On Saturday, the Lady Lions will have a much anticipated match as they take on Washington University at 9 a.m. and Fontbonne at 11:15 a.m.
