Lindenwood Splits Doubleheader with Saint Xavier

The Lindenwood softball team split its doubleheader with Saint Xavier on Saturday afternoon at the Lou Brock Sports Complex. The Lady Lions fell in the first game 7-6, but won the second game 14-13.

The first game started with both teams scoring a run in the first inning. Lindenwood took the lead in the second, scoring five runs on five hits. But the Cougars came right back with a five-run inning in the third to tie the game. Saint Xavier's game-winning run crossed the plate in the top of the fourth inning, after putting together a three-hit rally.

Sophia Galati led the offense for Lindenwood, hitting for two doubles and driving in three runs in the loss.

Game two was the highest-scoring game for the Lady Lions thus far in their season. The Cougars flew out to a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the second. But Lindenwood came ready for a slugfest as it came back with a run in the second and six more in the third inning. The six runs came off six hits, including doubles from both Jessica Long and Chelsea Landeck

Saint Xavier would deliver two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth, building a 10-7 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. In its half of the sixth, Lindenwood put together four hits and tallied five runs. Galati hit a triple, followed later by Landeck and pinch hitter, Macy Bross hitting back-to-back doubles to reclaim the lead.

The seventh inning held a lot of excitement. The Cougars stole the lead in their half of the inning, scoring three runs. With the score 13-12 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady Lions were in need of some clutch hitting. Lindenwood managed to get a run from an error by Saint Xavier to tie the game at 13-13. With runners on the corners and one out, Emily Johnson delivered the game-winning hit and drove in Galati to give the Lady Lions the 14-13 victory.

Johnson led the charge swinging the bat, going 4-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in, including the game-winner. Adi Powell pitched in relief to receive the win.

Lindenwood will return to the diamond Sunday afternoon to play a doubleheader against Fontbonne.
