Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams performed well at the Delta State Christmas Invite in Cleveland, Miss., winning its' respective competition over DSU and Lindenwood-Belleville. The men's team tallied 1,201.5 team points over the three-day period, while the women scored 1,284.
Felix Eigel recorded his best time of the season in the 500 free by nearly 12 seconds, touching the wall in 4:28.17, over a second and a half faster than teammate
Gustavo Silva Santa.
Sylwester Borowicz-Skoneczny placed third in the event, while
Austin Olivares rounded out the top five.
Continuing his success, Eigel also won the 400 IM to lead the pack of four Lindenwood swimmers in the event.
Kian Quigley (3:56.53),
Blake Logan (4:00.88), and
Cade Bains (4:03.89) finished consecutively after Eigel.
Eigel would win the 200 back, as well, while
Blake Logan placed second. Quigley would also win an event of his own, setting a DSU pool record in the 200 fly with a time of 1:46.82.
Serghei Golban regained control of the 50 free, winning the event for the fourth time this season. His time of 19.84 is an NCAA Division II automatic-qualifying mark, who has earned a trip to Birmingham, Ala.
Michal Szczukowski finished within a half-second of Golban, while
Joao Silveira placed fourth with a time of 20.55.
Along with adding a 100 fly win in the meet, Golban also anchored the 200 free relay team, turning in a time of 19.71 to edge out the Delta State competitors. Szczukowski and Silveira, along with
Alex Leff made up the quad for the event.
Cristian Vasquez and Silva Santa placed first and second, respectively, in the 1000 free. Vasquez finished in 9:13.63, beating his teammate by over five seconds. Silva Santa also placed second in the 200 free, while Olivares finished third. The duo was not done. In the 1650 free, the same combination between the two swimmers finished, Borowicz-Skoneczny and Chris Holmes placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Blake Logan won the 100 back with a time of 49.93.
For the women,
Allie Steinhauser and
Ashley Holloway began the success with a first and second-place finish, respectively, in the 1m dive.
Lindenwood had four of the top-five finishers in the 200 IM.
Erin Sutton recorded her second top-two finish in the event this season, and her first victory with a time of 2:05.16.
Ewa Dymarek finished just behind Sutton for second place, while
Ola Tomala finished third.
Kate Stauffer finished fifth for the team.
Stauffer also finished fifth in the 50 free, with
Bethany Steffes winning the event.
Kinga Lesinska added a third-place finish for the team, hitting the wall just .25 seconds behind Steffes.
Dymarek improved on her second-place finish earlier in the meet with a winning time of 1:02.53 in the 100 breast, which is also a new DSU pool record. The junior also won the 200 breast, beating the runner-up by nearly two seconds.
Tomala, Lesinska, and Steffes took part in the 200 free relay team, while
Abby Maricle recorded the best split time of the four to lead the quad to a new-pool record at Delta State with a 1:33.79 mark.
Tomala and Maricle continued their respective success in the 100 fly, placing second and fourth, respectively.
Hannah Vinyard won the event, narrowly defeating Tomala by .01 seconds.
McKenzie Murphy also placed third. Tomala would go on to win the 200 back event. Vinyard added another win for the event, this time being in the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.39.
Alecia McGillivray and Sutton placed second and third in the 400 IM, respectively, earning a combined 33 points for the team.
Simone de Rijcke would add her name to the list of winners for Lindenwood, touching the wall first in the 100 free, whle Lesinska and Steffes placed third and fourth, respectively. De Rijcke is also a part of another pool record being broken over the weekend by Lindenwood, along with Steffes, Lesinksa, and
Morgan Fischer in the 400 free relay.
In total, four pool records were broken by Lindenwood, while Golban has secured a spot at the national meet with his automatic-qualifying time in the 50 free. Both teams will get a break from competition until January 20 when Washington University (Mo.) travels to the Rec-Plex in St. Peters, Mo. for a dual meet.
