Ice Hockey (W) Claim 1st National Title

St. Charles, Mo. – March 13, 2006 – To say that a person could not have written it better in a script would be true of the ACHA women’s division finals at the Lindenwood Ice Arena this past Sunday. “It was like a movie ending. We battled from behind all game and had just enough perseverance and hard work to finish the job in overtime,” said head coach Vince O’Mara.

The Lady Lions needed 1:40 of overtime before sophomore Kristen Dlugos was able to chip home a rebound in front of the Robert Morris goal. That goal secured a 3-2 victory and the Lady Lions first ever national championship.

Robert Morris opened the scoring with a goal from Savannah Varner early in the second period. The Eagles would take a 1-0 lead into the second period intermission.

Junior Amy Dlugos tied up the game 1-1 with a goal five minutes into the third period. Senior Kat Hannah and sophomore Sarah Wilkinson assisted on the goal.

Robert Morris answered with a goal of their own only three minutes later to take a 2-1 lead. Alison Toft netted the go ahead goal.

The Lady Lions went on the power-play with six minutes to go in the game. Senior captain Kat Hannah banged home the set play to tie the game 2-2. Amy Dlugos and sophomore Katie Kells assisted on the game tying goal.

“We knew this was our time to score, if we didn’t score on this power-play we might not get the game tying goal. The girls had been working on a set play we call the wrap all season for a situation like this where we needed a goal and they executed the wrap perfectly,” said Coach O’Mara.

The Lady Lions had to overcome one more obstacle and had to kill off a penalty of their own with 1:24 left in the third period. The penalty killing unit was up to the task and killed off the final 1:24 of the third period and the first :36 seconds of overtime.
