The No. 3 Lindenwood football offense was nearly perfect on the day in its Homecoming contest against Baker. The Lions scored on eight of their first nine possessions in a 52-30 win that moved the team to a perfect 6-0 on the season.
Baker's strategy for an upset included keeping the ball away from the explosive Lions offense and the Wildcats achieved that goal by holding the ball for over 40 of the game's 60 minutes. Lindenwood defeated that plan though by scoring on quick scoring drives nearly every time it touched the ball and Baker's offense was unable to match that firepower.
Lindenwood wasted no time in ending Baker's nine quarter shutout string by scoring 31 seconds into the game as
Marcel Thompson caught a 35-yard reception from
Philip Staback. After a Baker punt, the Lions scored again with their longest drive of the game of 10 plays that ended on a
Richard Murrell one-yard run.
Baker finally got on the board late in the quarter with a touchdown, but Denodus O'Bryant returned the kickoff 94 yards to put the Lions up by a 21-7 margin at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats got within one possession of the Lions one more time with a touchdown, but O'Bryant scored another touchdown, this on an eight-yard run to allow the Lions to lead 28-13 at halftime.
Lindenwood then sealed the victory early in the third quarter. Baker had to punt on its first possession and the Lions scored their fourth touchdown on a quarterback rush by Staback. On the very first play after a Baker field goal,
Matt Angell received a backward pass from Staback and found Thompson wide open downfield for a 68 yard touchdown reception that put Lindenwood up 42-16.
Halley Ferrell kicked a 34-yard field goal and
David Ortega had a six-yard touchdown run to conclude the scoring for the Lions which went over 50 points for the fifth time this season.
Lindenwood finished the game with 503 total yards of offense, with 223 on the ground and 280 through the air. Until its final drive of the game, the Lions had only eight third-down attempts and converted six of them.
Thompson led the offense with seven receptions for 162 yards and two touchdowns, and Fleming caught three passes for 64 yards. Staback completed 12-of-18 passes for 170 yards and one touchdown. He extended his streak of not throwing an interception to 65 passes.
Rushing, Murrell finished one yard shy of the 100 mark on 11 carries and O'Bryant had 62 rushing yards on just six rushes.
Defensively,
Logen Wright and
Chris Howard each had 10 tackles and one pass breakup.
Alex Meraz and
Tony Ritzman both recorded a sack.
