Lady Lions Sweep Liberty

The top ranked Lindenwood women's ice hockey team defeated Liberty Friday afternoon, 5-3. Once again, the Lady Lions used a big period to put the Flames away for the second straight day.

Tied at one after the first period, Ashley Rebeck scored two goals in less than a minute to break open the game in the second. Liberty would respond moments later with a power play score but Mandy Dion notched her team leading 17 goal shortly after to give the Lady Lions a 4-2 advantage.

Midway through the third, the Flames netted their second power play score of the contest to cut the lead to one. Lindenwood had surrendered just three power play scores all year prior to allowing the two against Liberty. In the final seconds, Dion converted an empty net goal to end the scoring.

Like yesterday, Liberty scored first but Janella Brodett would find the back of the net with less than four minutes remaining in the first period to even the score.

Rebecca Bernet stopped 21 of 24 shots to earn the victory in goal. Shea Crawford finished with three assists and Lisa Moreau added two more.

On Thursday, the Lady Lions broke out of their slump in big way, erupting for six goals in the final period en-route to an 8-2 win over visiting Liberty. Mandy Dion netted a hat trick and the Lady Lions got back on the winning track, outshooting Liberty 51-20.

Liberty scored first but Dion would tie the game at one midway through the first period with a power play score. Dion would score her second goal less than a minute into the next period before Liberty would answer with a goal of its own.

Tied 2-2 heading into the final period, the Lady Lions broke the game open with six scores. Sarah Oliphant scored in the first five minutes and shortly after, Dion would complete the hat trick. Oliphant added another power play goal for the Lady Lions and Miranda Schrock, Brett Lobreau and Rebeck would all score in the final six minutes to cap the scoring.

Bernet earned the win in goal, stopping 18 shots. Moreau finished with three assists and Brodett and Lobreau each finished with a pair of helpers.

Last weekend, the Lady Lions saw their 31 game unbeaten streak snapped. Lindenwood (12-1-1, 8-0) will host the University of Colorado for a pair of games starting Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
