Lady Lion Basketball Begins Conference Play

Storyline

The Lady Lions will be back in action on Wednesday night for the final three-game stretch before the end of the first semester. The three game set will be the Lady Lions first conference games of the season.

Lindenwood will travel to Canton, Missouri to take on the Culver-Stockton Wildcats on Wednesday night. Next up will be a trip to Baker University, and it will end the first semester with a home game against the Evangel Crusaders.

A year ago the Lady Lions compiled a 9-11 record in Heart of American Athletic Conference play and were 2-4 against this week's opponents. The Lady Lions are looking to build on the success they experienced last week in a win against Hannibal-LaGrange.

Last Time Out
Before the Lady Lions had a little break for the Thanksgiving Holiday they finished a two-game stretch 1-1.

In the first of the two games, the Lady Lions fell to Missouri Baptist in a high scoring game, 107-97. The 97 points was the most the Lady Lions have scored in 2009-10. Junior Kelly Albers had a big game with 29 points and 12 rebounds.

Next up was another home game against Hannibal-LaGrange. The Lady Lions would get into the win column for the first time with a 69-63 win over the Trojans. Senior Cassie Williams had another big night leading the Lady Lions in points (20) and rebounds (12).

The win was also the first for interim head coach Jenone Bell.

Cleaning Up The Glass
Lindenwood is averaging over 39 rebounds and 14 offensive rebounds a game, which is good for third in the HAAC in both categories.
In six games this year four seperate Lady Lions have led the team in rebounds for a game.

Doubling Up

As a team, Lindenwood has already compiled three double-doubles in only six games. Cassie Williams leads the team with two and Kelly Albers has also recorded one.

Williams Leading The Way
Senior Cassie Williams is leading the Lady Lions in scoring with an average of 14.8 points a game. The senior from Wright City, Mo. is also leading the team in rebounds (7.3), steals (2.0), field goals made (32), blocks (0.7) and assists per game (4.1).

Leading At The Half
In the Lady Lions last three games, they have held a lead going into the halftime break. But the Lady Lions are just 1-2 in those games.

Pouring In The Points
In two of the Lady Lions first six games they have scored over 90 points. During the first six games the Lady Lions have averaged over 70 points a games which ranks them third in the Heart of American Athletic Conference.

Three-Point Defense
Lindenwood is holding its opponents to just 28 percent shooting from behind the three-point line. Opponents are averaging under five made three pointers a game.

Young Lady Lions
The six Lady Lion freshmen have performed well in the early season, averaging over seven points a game as a group and have 11 combined starts.

Streak Snapped
Lindenwood snapped a seven-game losing streak that dated back to the 2008-09 season. The Lady Lions lost their last two regular season games plus the first round of the HAAC tournament.

Getting To The Line
The Lady Lions have been to the free throw line 148 times already in 2009-10 which is the fourth most in the conference. Cassie Williams and Destini Wilson are averaging six free throw attempts a game to lead the team.

Team Full Of Thieves
In the Lady Lions first six games they have totalled 63 steals which is good for over 10 a game and puts them fifth in the HAAC.

Time For The HAAC
This week the Lady Lions start off their conference portion of the schedule and will look to improve on their record in the HAAC from the previous two seasons.

In 2007-08 and 2008-09 the Lady Lions have compiled a record of 9-11 in conference play each year.

Scouting Culver-Stockton
Culver-Stockton will host the Lady Lions in only its second home game of the season. The Wildcats have lost their last five games after winning the opening game of the season. A year ago the Wildcats were 0-2 against the Lady Lions.

The Wildcats are led by Lisa Plattner and Breezy Guymon who both average over 10 points a game. Helping in the middle is center Jamai Letcher who is leading the Wildcats in rebounding with over 10 a game, and 8.6 points a contest.

Culver-Stockton is coached by Timothy Southers who is in his second year as the head coach of the Wildcats.

Scouting Baker
The Baker Wildcats will host the Lady Lions on Saturday night after coming off an upset win of the 24th ranked Evangel Crusaders. Baker enters the game with a 4-4 record and will be playing its third straight HAAC game. A year ago the Wildcats were 2-0 against Lindenwood.
Baker is led by a pair of juniors, Emily Gibson and Brittany Hires. Gibson is leading the team in scoring with over 13 points a game and in rebounding (8.5). Hires is second on the team with 10.5 points a game.

Susan Decker is entering her 10th season as the head coach of the Baker Wildcats. During her time at Baker she has set the school record for wins in a season and has won over 21 games three times.

Scouting The Crusaders

The Evangel Crusaders visit the Hyland Performance Arena for the first and only time this year. Evangel who was ranked 24th in the preseason poll has started its season with a 6-3 record. The Crusaders won their first four games but are coming off a loss to HAAC foe, Baker.

Evangel is led by sophomore guard Kara Blankenship who is averaging over 17 points a game to go along with six rebounds a contest. A pair of juniors, Ashlee Luko and Caitlan Russel, are pitching in with 12.9 and 11.3 points respectively.

The Crusaders are coached by Leon Neal who is in his 17th year as the head coach. Neal has been a part of the Evangel program for a total of 23 years.

Up Next
The Lady Lions will have some time off for the holidays and will be back on the court at the Tabor Classic on January 1-2, against Tabor and Sterling.
