Lady Lions Begin Busy Week Against Avila

Storyline

It will be a busy week for the Lady Lions this week as they will take on three HAAC conference foes in Avila, Central Methodist and the MidAmerica Nazarene Pioneers.

First off for the ladies will be a home contest against the Avila Eagles. Next up for the Lady Lions will be a two game road trip starting in Fayette, Missouri with the Central Methodist Eagles and conclude the week with a visit to Olathe, Kansas to take on the Poineers.

Lindenwood will try to build on a big 95-90 overtime victory over the Graceland Yellowjackets. This week will give the team a chance to get their conference record back to .500.

Last Time Out
The Lady Lions resumed HAAC conference play last week when they played a pair of games against Missouri Valley and Graceland.

The week started out with a trip to Marshall, Missouri to take on the Missouri Valley Vikings. Missouri Valley jumped out to an early lead and held on late to beat the Lady Lions 71-69. Christina Edwards led the way for Lindenwood with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

The team did not have a very long time to think about the loss as the Lady Lions were right back on the court two days later to take on the Graceland Yellowjackets. After the two teams could not settle it in the first 40 minutes, the game went into overtime. Lindenwood outscored Gracleand 14-9 in the extra frame to upend the Yellowjackets 95-90. Three Lady Lions ended up with double-doubles, led by Edwards who scored 34 points and added 20 rebounds. Cassie Williams and Kelly Albers also pitched in with double-doubles of their own.

Roaring Start
Junior forward Christina Edwards made her Lindenwood debut at the Tabor Classic earlier in the season and has now played four games and has recored four double-doubles.

In a win against Graceland the junior from Kalamzoo, Michigan had a season-high 34 points and 20 rebounds. The 30 point game was the first for the team this year as was the 20 rebounds. The 34 points was the most a Lady Lion has scored since Ashley Comer's 36 in 2003.

In her four games this season Edwards is averaging 23 points and 15.3 rebounds a game.

Three-Point Defense
Lindenwood is holding its opponents to just 30 percent shooting from behind the three-point line. Opponents are averaging under six made three pointers a game. The 30 percent ranks the Lady Lions 47th in the country and the third in the HAAC.

Senior Leadership
Senior Cassie Williams is leading the Lady Lions in several categories. She leads the team in steals (1.7), assists (3.6) and minutes played per game (26.3). She also is tops in free-throws attempted (67) and made (42) and total rebounds (113). She is second on the team in total blocks (7) and rebounds per game (8.7) and third in scoring, averaging 10.8 points per contest.

Team of Thieves
In its first 13 games, Lindenwood has recorded 136 steals, good for more than 10 a game and fourth among HAAC schools. Every player has recorded at least one and five have double-digits.

Against Tabor, the Lady Lions tallied 19 thefts. The team's season high is 21 against Olivet Nazarene.

Cleaning The Glass
During conference games Lindenwood has recorded the most offensive rebounds with 87 and are second most with over 16 a game. In the win against Graceland the team outrebounded the visiting Yellowjackets by 68-40 margin. The 68 boards was the most rebounds LU has recorded this season.

In those 68 rebounds the Lady Lions coralled 36 offensive rebounds which is also the most they have compiled this season.

Getting To The Stripe
Through 13 games this season Lindenwood has taken the most free throws in the HAAC. The 341 free throw attempts is 24 more than Missouri Valley who is second in the conference.

Against Graceland the team went to the stripe 29 times which was most this season and made 23, which was also the most.

Extra Time
The extra period the Lady Lions and the Yellowjackets played was the first overtime game for Lindenwood since they lost to Baker in 2007. The win was the first for the program since 2007 when they beat Avila.

Last Year
A year ago the Lady Lions were 0-2 against Avila and MidAmerica and 2-0 against the Eagles of Central Methodist. Lindenwood lost 49-63 at home and 65-84 on the road against Avila. Against the Pioneers LU fell 60-74 at home and 58-74 on the road in Olathe. In the two wins against the Eagles, Lindenwood won by four at home (69-65) and by five on the road (59-54).

Scouting Avila
The Avila Eagles come into the Hyland Performance Arena with a perfect HAAC record (3-0) and have won seven out of their last eight games.

The Eagles are led by a three headed monster. All three players average over 10 points a game led by junior post player Alyson Young's 18.3.

Helping out Young is Jaime Kenny who averages over 15 points a game and sophomore Courtney Gimlin pitches in over 12 points a night.

Larry Williams is in his fourth season at the helm of the Eagles program and has compiled a record of 59-35. A year ago Williams led the Eagles to a 24-7 record and has put Avila at the top of the standings again this season.

Scouting Central Methodist
The Central Methodist Eagles come into the contest against the Lady Lions with an overall record of 6-9 but have yet to get in the win column in conference play.

Central Methodist is led by youngster Sami Dunger who leads the team in scoring with over 17 points a game. Senior Brittany Elliot pitches in with 12.8 points a game to go along with over four rebounds a game. So far this season the Eagles have played stellar defense all season and have forced more turnovers that their opponents.

The Eagles are led by Andrea Brooks who is in her fourth season at the helm of the Central Methodist program.

Scouting MidAmerica
The MidAmerica Nazarene Pioneers currently sport a 7-7 overall record and a conference mark of 2-2. The Pioneers have won their last two conference games and will look to improve their conference record above .500.

MidAm is led by 6'2” senior center Bethany Rexroth who is averaging over 17 points a game to go along with 8.8 rebound per contest. Rexroth also averages 2.8 blocks a game which ranks her sixth in all of Division I.

The Pioneers are led by head coach Bill Olin.

Up Next
The Lady Lions will play a pair of games on the road. First up will be a trip to Olathe, Kansas to take on MidAmerica Nazarene, from there they will travel to Atchinson, Kansas to take on the Benedictine Ravens.
