Storyline
The 2009-10 season is dwindling down and the Lady Lions are trying to get back into the HAAC race. The top eight teams in the HAAC make the conference tournament and that is exactly where the Lady Lions are trying to reach. A pair of wins this week will go along way in reaching that goal.
This week Lindenwood will continue its three-game home stand with games against the Culver-Stockton Lady Wildcats and the Baker University Wildcats before they go on the road next week.
Lindenwood will try and improve on its home record of 2-6 with a pair of contests. A year ago the team was 6-5 at the Hyland Performance Arena.
Earlier in the season Lindenwood was 1-1 against these two teams. They beat Culver and then fell to Baker, both games were on the road.
Last Time Out
Last week the Lady Lions finished 1-1 with a win over Benedictine and a home loss to William Jewell.
In game one of the week the team traveled to Atchison, Kansas to take on the Ravens. Lindenwood would leave with their biggest win of the year. Senior point guard
Gina Ferrer had the best game of her career scoring 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 6-of-8 from behind the three point line.
The week came to a close when the Lady Lions came back to the Hyland Performance Arena to take on the William Jewell Cardinals. Lindenwood would shoot only 29 percent from the field and fell to the Cardinals, 76-43.
Christina Edwards once again led the team in scoring with 13 points and in rebounds with 10. The double-double was her sixth of the season.
Roaring Start
Junior forward
Christina Edwards made her Lindenwood debut at the Tabor Classic nine games into the season. Since she made her first appearance she has been one of the best players in the HAAC. In nine games she is averaging over 19 point a game and over 11 rebounds. The 19 points would lead the conference if she would qualify.
In her nine games she has led the team in scoring eight times and rebounds in every single game. The junior from Kalamazoo, Michigan has also compiled six double-doubles this season.
Earlier in the season Edwards netted 35 points which was the most for a Lady Lion since Ashley Comer scored 36 in 2003.
Senior Leadership
Senior
Cassie Williams is leading the Lady Lions in several categories. She leads the team in steals (1.7), total assists (56), minutes played per game (29.9), blocks (9), steals (31) and total rebounds (136). She is second on the team in scoring (9.1) and rebounds (7.6).
She has also led the team in assists in nine contests and leads the team with eight 10+ rebound games.
Team of Thieves
Lindenwood has recorded 180 steals, good for 10 a game which is the fifth most among HAAC schools. Every player has recorded at least one and seven have double-digits. The 180 steals is 13 more than their opponents.
Earlier in the season against Tabor, the Lady Lions tallied 19 thefts. The team's season high is 21 against Olivet Nazarene.
Cleaning The Glass
Through 18 games this season the team has corralled the third most defensive rebounds (436) in the HAAC and average over 13 offensive rebounds a game. The offensive rebound average ranks the squad third in the HAAC and 39th in all of Division I.
Christina Edwards leads the team with over 11 rebounds a game and has compiled the most offensive rebounds with 58.
Cassie Williams has recorded 93 defensive rebounds to lead the team.
The Magic Number
When the Lady Lions' defense only surrenders 60 points or less the team is 2-0. The best defensive effort came against Tabor College when the team only allowed 28 points.
Career Night
Last week's win over the Benedictine Ravens was the biggest of the season for the team and senior
Gina Ferrer picked a great night to have her best game as a Lady Lion. The senior from Edinburg, Texas scored 22-points on 8-of-10 shooting and she also made 6-of-8 shots from behind the arc.
Getting To The Stripe
Getting to the charity stripe is something that has occurred very often this season. The Lady Lions have taken 420 free throws this season which is the third most in the HAAC. Leading the way is the dynamic duo of Edwards and Williams. Williams leads the team with 88 attempts and Edwards is right behind her with 85.
Scouting Culver-Stockton
The Culver-Stockton Lady Wildcats come to the Hyland Performance with an overall record of 3-15 and are still searching for their first HAAC win of the season.
Culver-Stockton has not left Lindenwood with a win since the 2006-07 season and have lost their last five games against the Lady Lions.
The Lady Wildcats spread their scoring around to numerous players as not one averages in double-figures. Senior Jami Letcher leads the team with 8.6 points a game and adds over 10 rebounds. Freshman Lisa Plattner is second on the team with 8.13 points a night.
At the helm of the Lady Wildcats basketball program is interim head coach Leigh Conover.
Scouting Baker
The Baker Wildcats visit St. Charles in a tie for first place in the HAAC with an overall record of 12-7 but a 8-1 record in conference play.
Defense is the name of the game for Baker as they are 22nd in the entire country in scoring defense. They only allow opponents 59.3 points a game and they also hold their opponents to just 34 percent shooting a night.
Leading the way for the Wildcats is Emily Gibson who averages over 14 points, 10 rebounds and 1.9 blocks a night. Her 10 rebounds is good for 10th in the country and her blocks are good for 12th. Brittany Hines chips in with 10.35 points.
Susan Decker has been at the helm of the Wildcats program since 2000. Baker has had several 21-win seasons under Decker and have set school records for the number of games won in a single season.
Last Time
Earlier in the season Lindenwood upended the Culver-Stockton Lady Wildcats on the road, 58-50. Three Lady Lions scored in double-figures led by
Destini Wilson's 20 points.
Kelly Albers compiled a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The first time Lindenwood and Baker met the Wildcats beat the Lady Lions in Baldwin City, 74-52. Only
Sade Adams scored in double figures for the Lady Lions. The team was 4-for-20 from behind the arc and shot under 35 percent from the field. Baker's Emily Gibson scored her season-high 27 points in the win.
Up Next
Next week the Lady Lions will travel to Springfield, Missouri to take on the leader of the conference, Evangel. After the trip the Lady Lions will then be back home to battle the Benedictine Ravens on Saturday February 6th.
