Lions Go 2-1 During Day One Of National Duals Championship

The Lindenwood men's wrestling team went 2-1 during day one of the NWCA/NAIA National Duals Championship. The Lions defeated Southern Oregon and Cumberland, but a quarterfinal loss to McKendree snapped the team's string of reaching the championship round at this event.

In a rematch of last year's championship match, Lindenwood and Southern Oregon were matched up in round one. Southern Oregon jumped out to a 9-0 lead, but the Lions won the next five matches to go up 24-9. Brad Neitenbach started the streak with a pin at 141, and Brian Oechsner and Chris Chionuma also had pins. Southern Oregon cut the lead to 24-18 with wins at 184 pounds and 197 pounds, before Tyler Porras sealed the 26-18 win with a decision victory at heavyweight.

In the quarterfinals, McKendree had three pins and one technical fall on its way to a 29-18 victory. The two teams were tied heading into the final two weight classes. McKendree put the pressure with a technical fall at 197 pounds. Porras was leading his heavyweight match but, trying for a pin for the team victory, he ended up being pinned himself. Jake Johnson was a pin for Linenwood, and Sam Schmitz and Chris Chionuma had the other non-forfeit victories.

Versus Cumberland, Lindenwood won the final seven matches to overcome a 11-0 deficit and the Lions won 28-11. Schmitz and Daniel Chionuma had pins for Lindenwood.

Schmitz led the Lions by going 3-0 during the day's action.

On Sunday, Lindenwood will look to capture the fifth-place title starting with a dual against Campbellsville.
