Storyline
After starting the season off with a 2-0 mark the young Lady Lions have had to face a little adversity for the first time this season. The team has dropped its last two games and is at .500.
This week the Lady Lions will have a chance to redeem themselves with a road game and then they will be back home.
First up will be a road game in Columbia, Mo. against the Colombia College Cougars. After the Thursday contest the Lady Lions will have only one day of rest and will be back at home against Harris-Stowe on Saturday night. After this week's games the Lady Lions will have only two non-conference games left until the team will begin its conference portion of the schedule.
Last Time Out
The Lindenwood Lady Lions shrugged off a tough first half to battle back against No. 25 McKendree, but just couldn't finish off the game and fell 71-66 at home to start last week.
Lindenwood would shoot 35 percent from the field for the game compared to the Bearcats' 36 percent. Both teams struggled from behind the arc making a combined three of 19 attempts. The Lady Lions outrebounded McKendree 42-39 but the difference was the free-throw line. McKendree shot 20 more free throws that Lindenwood and made 14 more.
Senior
Kelly Albers led the way for the Lady Lions recording a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Harrington led the team in scoring with 17 and every Lady Lion but one who played scored at least two points.
To close out the week the team traveled to Missouri Baptist and fell 88-61.
Leading the way for the Lady Lions again was Albers who recorded her second straight double-double with 10 rebounds and 16 points. Ten different Lady Lions scored at least a point.
Young Talent
The 2010-11 edition of the Lady Lions is a very young squad but the freshman are already playing well beyond their years. The five freshman are averaging a combined 26.2 points led by
Marissa Lehnig who is averaging seven points a night.
Block Party
The Lady Lions defense has been very stellar so far this season and blocking shots has been a strength. The team has recorded a total of 20 blocks on the year for an average of five a game. The five blocks a game is 10th best in the whole country and ranks first in the HAAC.
Center of Attention
Center
Kelly Albers has made her presence felt in the paint. The senior is averaging a double-double this season with 13 points and 10.5 rebounds a night. In the win against Harris-Stowe Albers recorded a career-high 13 rebounds. She has also recorded back-to-back double-doubles.
Turnover Battle
Creating turnovers has been an emphasis in the Lady Lions defensive plan. In four games this season Lindenwood has created 91 turnovers and have only committed 81.
Stellar Defense
So far this season the Lady Lions defense has been very impressive. In four games the defense has held its opponents to 37 percent shooting and has given up just 69.5 points a game. The defense has also compiled 39 steals.
Swiping The Ball
In all but one game this season the team has had double-digit steals. The Lady Lions are averaging 10 steals a game which is good for fourth in the conference.
Morgan Harrington
One of
Tony Francis' biggest recruits coming into his program will be
Morgan Harrington and the sophomore has started her Lindenwood career with a bang. The Belleville native is averaging a team high 15.3 points and led the team in scoring against Lindenwood-Belleville.
Back For More
After playing in all 30 games and averaging 8.9 points for the Lady Lions as a freshman,
Sarah Schnieders took a year off from the game. The St. Peters native sat out all of the 2009-10 season but now the sophomore is back and has picked up right where she left off. So far this season she is averaging six points and almost five rebounds.
Dominating The Boards
Rebounding has been one of the best aspects of this year's team so far. The Lady Lions are out-rebounding their opponents by an average of six rebounds a night. Against Harris-Stowe they outrebounded the Hornets 64-38 and 30-12 on the offensive glass.
Abby's Stellar Career
Abby Schultenhenrich is starting her fourth and final year in a Lindenwood uniform. The senior from St. Charles is just five three-pointers away from 100 for her career and is just 21 points away from scoring 600.
The Schedule
The 2010-11 season schedule is like always, going to be a tough road for the Lady Lions. The team will play two teams that are ranked in the NAIA preseason poll. McKendree comes in at 25 and the Evangel Crusaders are 24. Three other teams are receiving votes, William Jewell, Avila, and Baker.
Scouting The Cougars
The Columbia College Cougars come into the match-up against the Lady Lions with a record of 1-3. After winning its opening game the Cougars have dropped their last three. The Cougars one win was against HAAC team, Central Methodist.
As a team Columbia has recorded the second most blocks in the country. Individually, center Amanda Phillips is leading the country in blocks with 17. The junior also chips in seven points a night to go along with her team leading 6.3 rebounds. Leading the team in scoring is another junior, Kayla Rice. The Huntsville, Mo. native is averaging 13.75 points a game.
Mike Davis is entering his ninth season at the helm of the Columbia College women's basketball program. In his first eight years he has compiled a record of 232-75 and has led Columbia to the NAIA National Tournament seven out of the past nine seasons. He also led the team to three AMC championships and been named the coach of the year four times.
Scouting The Hornets
The Harris-Stowe Hornets come into the contest with a record of 1-5. The Hornets only win came against Lindenwood-Belleville.
The Hornets are led by Lanika Lawrence who is leading the team in scoring with 18 points a night and is also leading the squad in rebounds with 5.2 rebounds. Denisha Mitchell is also having a stellar start to her season averaging 14.5 points to go along with 4.7 rebounds.
The Hornets are coached by Dennis Griffen who is in his first season as the head coach.
Last Time
Last season the Cougars travelled St. Charles to take on the Lady Lions. Columbia jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, beating Lindenwood 99-52. The Cougars shot over 50 percent in the game and four ladies scored in double figures.
The Lady Lions and the Hornets met just earlier this season. Lindenwood took care of the Hornets 80-45. Abby Schultenhenrich led the way in the win scoring 11 points.
Up Next
Next up for the Lady Lions will be a pair of non-confernece games against Hannibal-LaGrange and Fisk. Following those two games will be the start of the HAAC portion of the schedule with a contest against Culver-Stockton.
