Storyline
The Lindenwood Lady Lions basketball team will take to the road this week. The Lady Lions will begin the two-game stretch with a game against Hannibal-LaGrange and close the stretch with a trip to Nashville, Tenn. for a contest against Fisk.
After leveling its record at three last week the Lady Lions will have a chance to get their record above .500 before they start conference play on December 2.
Last Time Out
From the opening tip against Columbia College it was all Cougars and the home team cruised to an 89-57 win.
The Cougars came out on fire shooting the ball. In the opening half Columbia shot 61 percent from the field but the Lady Lions endured the hot start and only trailed by 11 heading into the locker room. Unfortunately for the visitors the halftime break did not cool down the Cougars.
A pair of freshman led the way in scoring for the Lady Lions.
Shantey Hibbler and
Ashley Roth scored 12 and 11 respectively, which was both of their career-highs in point scored.
Kelly Albers led the way on the boards with nine.
The Hornets came out shooting the ball well and jumped out to an early 10-7 lead. Lindenwood would tie the score at 10 after a
Sarah Schnieders' three-pointer. Both teams would trade the lead back-and-forth until the 6:23 mark when the Lady Lions went on a 22-2 run to close the half and take a 42-29 lead.
Kelly Albers led the way for the Lady Lions with 22 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. A pair of freshmen also recorded their first career double-doubles.
Cassie Bluemner scored 13 points and 11 rebounds while
Shantey Hibbler grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 15 points.
Young Talent
The 2010-11 edition of the Lady Lions is a very young squad but the freshman are already playing well beyond their years. The five freshman are averaging a combined 29.9 points led by
Shantey Hibbler who is averaging eight points a night.
Block Party
The Lady Lions defense has been very stellar so far this season and blocking shots has been a strength. The team has recorded a total of 25 blocks on the year for an average of five a game. The five blocks a game is 14th best in the whole country and ranks first in the HAAC.
Center of Attention
Center
Kelly Albers has made her presence felt in the paint. The senior is averaging a double-double this season with 13 points and 11 rebounds a night. Against Harris-Stowe last week Albers scored 22 points while grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds.
Shantey Making Her Mark
Freshman
Shantey Hibbler is starting to hit her stride in her first season in collegiate basketball. In the Lady Lions last two games Hibbler is averaging 13 points and seven rebounds a game.
Stellar Defense
So far this season the Lady Lions defense has been very impressive. In four games the defense has held its opponents to 37 percent shooting and has given up just 69.5 points a game. The defense has also compiled 39 steals.
Swiping The Ball
In all but one game this season the team has had double-digit steals. The Lady Lions are averaging 10 steals a game which is good for fourth in the conference.
Morgan Harrington
One of
Tony Francis' biggest recruits coming into his program will be
Morgan Harrington and the sophomore has started her Lindenwood career with a bang. The Belleville native is averaging a team high 15.3 points and led the team in scoring against Lindenwood-Belleville.
Back For More
After playing in all 30 games and averaging 8.9 points for the Lady Lions as a freshman,
Sarah Schnieders took a year off from the game. The St. Peters native sat out all of the 2009-10 season but now the sophomore is back and has picked up right where she left off. So far this season she is averaging six points and almost five rebounds.
Dominating The Boards
Rebounding has been one of the best aspects of this year's team so far. The Lady Lions are out-rebounding their opponents by an average of six rebounds a night. The best rebounding effort came against Harris-Stowe. The Lady Lions outrebounded the Hornets 58-36.
Abby's Stellar Career
Abby Schultenhenrich is starting her fourth and final year in a Lindenwood uniform. The senior from St. Charles is just four three-pointers away from 100 for her career and is just seven points away from scoring 600.
Good Start
If Lindenwood could win the next two games it would be the best record the team has had heading into conference play over the past five season.
The Schedule
The 2010-11 season schedule is like always, going to be a tough road for the Lady Lions. The team will play two teams that are ranked in the NAIA preseason poll. McKendree comes in at 25 and the Evangel Crusaders are 24. Three other teams are receiving votes, William Jewell, Avila, and Baker.
Scouting The Trojans
The Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans come into the contest against the Lady Lions with a record of 1-5 and have lost its last four games. The Trojans have compiled a record of 0-3 against HAAC schools.
Hannibal-LaGrange is led by three ladies that average double figures. Leading the way scoring 14 points a night is junior Kayla Hruby. Seniors Natasha Bonner and Angie Schwagmeyer are both pouring in 13 points a night. Schwagmeyer also chips in six rebound.
At the helm is Delena White who is in her fourth year as the head coach of the Trojans.
Scouting The Bulldogs
The Fisk University Bulldogs enter the contest against the Lady Lions with a record of 2-5 but have dropped its last two games. The Bulldogs compete in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.
Fisk is led by four scorers who all score in the double digits. Junior Simona Newman leads the team with 14.5 points to go along with si9x rebounds a game. Freshman Tiana Lloyd is second on the team with 14 points and a pair of juniors round out the top scorers. Raona Stowers scores 10.5 and Rava Brown pitches in with 10.3.
The Bulldogs are coached by Wendolyn Majors.
Last Time
Last season the Lady Lions took on the Trojans at the Hyland Arena and upended the visitors 69-63. Lindenwood held a point lead heading into the locker room at the half then would extend that lead in the final half. Abby Schultenhenrich had some success last season against the Trojans scoring 15 points. As a team the Lady Lions shot a season high 51.1 percent from the field.

Next up for the Lady Lions is the beginning of the HAAC portion of the schedule. The Lady Lions will begin with a home contest against Culver-Stockton then road games against Baker and Evangel.
