The Lindenwood men's wrestling team advanced to the championship match at the NWCA/NAIA National Duals and finished the event with a runner-up finish.
In the finals, the No. 7 Lions fell to No. 1 Notre Dame by a 31-16 score. Notre Dame picked up three pins and one forfeit victory to capture the title. One pin and one forfeit came in the final two matches after Lindenwood closed the contest to 19-16 with three straight wins at 165, 174, and 184 pounds. For Lindenwood,
Justin Forrest earned a major decision victory,
Chris Chionuma and Dirk Hurrin won decision wins, and
Jake Johnson had a forfeit victory.
In the semfinal round, Lindenwood defeated No. 6 Campbellsville by an 18-13 margin. Lindenwood fell in a 13-0 hole, but won the final six matches for the victory. All six Lindenwood victories came by decision by
Vince Hannon,
Donald Woods, Johnson, Chionuma, Hurrin, and
Steven Butler.
Lindenwood opened the tournament on Saturday with a 19-12 victory over Jamestown. The Lions won six of the final seven matches for the come-from-behind victory. Woods and Chionuma each had major decision victories. Chionuma's win at 184 pounds put the Lions ahead 13-12, and Hurrin and Butler each earned decision wins at 197 and 285 pounds, respectively, to seal the victory. Other decision wins came from
Daniel Breit and Drae Cox.
In the quarterfinals, Lindenwood upset No. 2 McKendree by a 16-15 score. Both teams won five matches, and the difference was one major decision victory by Hannon at 157 pounds. Lindenwood's decision victories came from Forrest, Daniel Osmer, Woods, and Chionuma.
