The Lindenwood women's ice hockey team hosted its first NCAA opponent on Friday night at the Lindenwood Ice Arena. Nationally-ranked Mercyhurst spoiled the festivities though with a 7-0 victory over the Lady Lions.
Lindenwood had a good first period defensively, as it allowed just one goal and 18 shots on goal. In the final two periods, the Lady Lions were called for five penalties, which gave Mercyhurst numerous more scoring chances. The Lakers had 56 shots on goal in the final two periods, scored two power play goals, and six total goals. Most of those goals came late in the periods, with four coming with less than five minutes remaining in a period, and only one coming in the first-half of a period.
Taylor Fairchild finished the game with 67 saves in goal for Lindenwood.
Offensively, Lindenwood couldn't generate many opportunities against the number eight team in the country. Mercyhurst recorded its third straight shutout by allowing just 14 shots on goal for the game.
Caitlyn Post had a team-high three shots on goal. The Lady Lions had just one power-play opportunity, and recorded two shots on goal on that unsuccessful try.
Lindenwood falls to 0-9-0 with the loss, and Mercyhurst improves to 5-2-0. The two teams will return to the ice on Saturday afternoon for a 12 p.m. game.
