Lady Lions Win First Game of the Season Over Illinois-Springfield

Box Score The Lindenwood Lady Lions basketball team won its first game of the season after a come-from-behind 61-59 victory over the University of Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars on Tuesday night at the Hyland Arena.

The contest started off very slowly for both teams. The Prairie Stars hit their first shot of the game but did not score again until the 14 minute mark. For the Lady Lions, they didn't get on the scoreboard until the 13 minute mark.

Illinois-Springfield led for most of the first half until with six minutes to go, when Lindenwood went on an 8-0 run to capture the lead. The Lady Lions pushed the lead to four at the end of the opening half.

Lindenwood started the second half with a 12-2 run and extended the lead up to 14. But the Prairie Stars did not go away. The visitors answered the Lady Lions' big run with a 19-4 spurt over a five-minute span to grab a two-point lead.

The two teams traded buckets over the next four minutes and the game was tied five separate times. Lindenwood grabbed the lead with 2:06 to play and did not relinquish it. The Lady Lions went four-for-four from the free-throw line over the final 15 seconds to seal the game.

The Lindenwood defense was stifling all night. The Prairie Stars shot just 35 percent from the field and turned the ball over
14 times. The Lady Lions shot 45 percent from the field and grabbed 35 rebounds.

Sarah Schnieders led the way for Lindenwood off the bench scoring 16 points and adding five assists. Caroline Bourlioux chipped in with 15 points and led the team in rebounds with eight. Meagan Hittle made her first start of her career and scored 13 points.

With the win, the Lady Lions are now 1-2. The team will spend the Thanksgiving holiday in Spearfish, S.D. for the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Thanksgiving Classic.
