After starting the season with an 0-2 record, the Lady Lions have won their last three games. The team went 2-0 at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Thanksgiving Classic and finished in the top spot.
This week, Lindenwood will face its toughest competition to date. First off, will be a road game at Drury, who is coming off a victory over NCAA Division II top 10, Washburn.
After the trip to Drury, the Lady Lions will go to Cape Girardeau, Mo. to take on NCAA Division I, Southeast Missouri State. This will be the first of two Division I opponents for Lindenwood.
Last Time Out
The Lindenwood Lady Lions basketball team is coming off a 2-0 weekend at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Thanksgiving Classic in Spearfish, S.D.
In the first game of the classic, the Lady Lions beat South Dakota School of Mines and Technology 75-70
South Dakota School of Mines headed into the halftime break with a seven point lead, but the final half was all Lindenwood.
The Lady Lions outscored the Lady Hardrockers 44-32 in the second half and held on for the victory.
Both teams turned the ball over 20 plus times and shot 33 free throws. Lindenwood won the rebounding battle 31-28, and also compiled 11 steals.
Five Lady Lions scored in double figures led by
Sarah Schnieders' 15.
Julie Hlinak scored a career-high 14 points which included going three-for-four from behind the arc.
Marissa Lehnig and
Sonya Milford each scored 12 points, and
Meagan Hittle scored 10.
The second game of the weekend was against Black Hills State. Lindenwood beat the Yellowjackets 69-62.
The Lady Lions jumped out to an early lead and led by 10 after the first 20 minutes of play. Black Hills State tried to come back, but the deficit was just too much to overcome and Lindenwood held on for the seven-point victory.
Lindenwood was led by Lehnig who scored a career-high 21 points, which included a five-for-eight night from behind the arc. Hittle pitched in with 11 points and led the team with seven rebounds.
Caroline Bourlioux scored 13 points and Schneiders contributed 10 points.
Spreading It Around
The Lady Lions have done a great job spreading around the scoring. Five separate ladies are averaging in double figures. Leading the way is
Morgan Harrington with 14.5 points.
Scoring
Through five games this season, both the Lady Lions and their opponents have scored 170 points. In the second half, Lindenwood is scoring 170 and opponents 171.
Schnieders Turning It On
After a slow start to her junior season,
Sarah Schnieders has turned it around. In the past three games, the junior from St. Peters is shooting .560 from the field and has averaged over 10 points a game.
Cleaning the Glass
Rebounding has not been much of an issue for Lindenwood in the early season. The Lady Lions have dominated the defensive glass outrebounding their opponents 113-95.
Lindenwood has had the rebounding edge in every contest but one.
Lehnig Career Game
Marissa Lehnig made her first start of the season against Black Hills State, and had her best night as a Lady Lion. Lehnig scored a career-high 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting and 5-for-8 from behind the three-point line.
Hot Shooting
Through five games this season, the team is shooting 50 percent from the field. The Lady Lions have shot over 50 percent in all but two games. Their best night came against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology when the team shot 59 percent.
Four ladies are also shooting over 50 percent from the field. Leading the way is
Julie Hlinak who is shooting 63 percent, followed by
Marissa Lehnig's 62 percent,
Cassie Bluemner's 58 percent,
Meagan Hittle's 56 percent, and
Sonya Milford's 50 percent.
Freshman Stepping In
Over the last three games, freshman
Meagan Hittle was put in the starting lineup and she has not disappointed. She is averaging just under eight points, and six rebounds in her starts.
Home Court Advantage
The Hyland Arena floor was a big advantage for the Lady Lions in 2010-11. Lindenwood compiled a record of 12-4 at home.
This season, Lindenwood has started the season 1-1 at home.
Young Squad
The 2011-12 version of the Lindenwood Lady Lions will be very short in the tooth.
There are no seniors on the team and just three juniors. The Lady Lions consist of four freshman, six sophomores, and the three juniors.
Opponents
This season with the Lindenwood athletics department in a transition year, the team will be taking on a wide range of opponents. The Lady Lions will play 10 NCAA Division II teams, five NAIA teams, and two NCAA Division I teams.
Road Warriors
The Lady Lions will be criss-crossing the country in 2011-12 and will also take a trip off the continental United States. Lindenwood will travel to 10 states this season including the program's first ever trip to Hawaii. The ladies will travel to Louisiana, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and South Dakota.
About the Panthers
The Drury Panthers come into the matchup with the Lady Lions with a record of 2-1. The Panthers only loss this season is to NCAA Division I, Oral Roberts.
Drury is averaging 57.3 points a game on offense and are surrendering 60 points on defense.
Leading the way for the Panthers is Bethani Funderburk who is averaging 14.7 points and also grabs 3.3 rebounds. Katie Pritchard is the team's second leading scorer with an average of 11 a game.
Steve Harold is the head coach of Drury and is in his fourth season. He has compiled a record of 97-32.
About the Redhawks
Southeast Missouri State will have two games before taking on the Lady Lions. The Redhawks will play Arkansas State and then Northern Iowa.
Southeast Missouri enters the week with a record of 0-6. The team is averaging 45 points on offense and 61.2 points on defense.
Leading the way offensively is Bailie Roberts who is averaging 10.2 points a game. Bianca Beck is the team's second leading scorer with an average of 7.2 points.
Ty Margenthaler is in his first season as the head coach of the Redhawks.
