The Lindenwood Lady Lions basketball team ended one of its best seasons in over 10 years with a 67-56 win over the William Jewell Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at the Hyland Arena. The Lady Lions reached 20 wins for the first time since the 2000-2001 season.
Saturday afternoon was also senior day for four Lady Lions and the seniors led the way for Lindenwood. Three out of the Lady Lions four seniors scored in double-figures led by Abby Schultenhenrich's 16 points. Christina Edwards chipped in with 12 and Kelly Albers scored 11.
To start the game the teams traded the lead until the 11:54 mark when the Lady Lions went on a 13-4 run to take a 10 point lead. Albers connected on a layup with just two seconds to go in the opening half to give the Lady Lions a 13 point lead at the half.
The second half started with Lindenwood pushing the lead to as high as 17, but at the 11:55 mark the Cardinals went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to seven. The seven point deficit was as close as the Cardinals got.
Both teams struggled from the floor with the Lady Lions shooting 36 percent and the Cardinals 38 percent. Lindenwood dominated the glass outrebounding the Cardinals 48-33.
The three seniors led the way for the Lady Lions while Marissa Lehnig chipped in with 11 points and had a team-high three steals. Sarah Schnieders also had a solid day with eight points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.
Lindenwood ended the regular season with an overall record of 20-9 and a conference mark of 15-5. The Lady Lions will be the two seed in the HAAC Tournament and will host a first round game this Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Hyland Arena.
