Storyline
As the 2010-11 season winds down, the Lindenwood Lady Lions have just six games remaining in the regular season. The team is poised to have one of the best seasons in the past 10 years.
The final stretch of games will start with the Lady Lions playing five games in the next ten days. It all starts with three games in five days. First up, will be a road contest against Missouri Valley on Thursday night. Followed by home games against Graceland and Avila.
Lindenwood is positioning itself to receive a high seed in the HAAC Tournament. As of the Missouri Valley game, the Lady Lions sit in second place all by themselves and have a full game lead on Benedictine, who is in third place.
Last Time Out
Lindenwood won its final non-conference game of the regular season 69-43 over the visiting Fisk Bulldogs last Monday night.
Lindenwood set a season-high with 66 rebounds, led by
Christina Edwards, who grabbed 19. She also scored her season-high in points with 14.
In the opening half the Lady Lions shot 52 percent from the field compared to Fisk's 22 percent.
The second half was much of the same for the home team as it outscored Fisk 32-21 and went on for the 69-43 win.
To go along with Edwards' big night, freshman
Marissa Lehnig scored 10 points and
Cassie Bluemner was just a rebound short of her first career double-double.
Major Improvement
The 2010-11 Lady Lions have exceeded a ton of expectations this season. The team has already won six more games than last year's squad. The six victories is the third best improvement in all NAIA Division I. California Baptist and Park are at the top, with a seven win improvement.
This Year's Squad
Not only have the Lady Lions improved their win total by a wide margin from last season, the team is better in almost every statistical category.
In 2009-10, the team averaged 64.1 points a game offensively and this season, the team has increased its average by over five points. Defensively, the 2010-11 edition of the Lady Lions is surrendering 10 less points a game. On the boards, the Lady Lions had a rebound margin of -4 last season, but this year the team has a margin of +7. Shooting has also improved in 2010-11. This season the team is shooting eight percent better from the field compared to last year.
Rebounds of Plenty
In the Lady Lions last non-conference game against Fisk, the team grabbed 66 total rebounds. The 66 boards was the fifth most in the history of the program.
Shooting the Rock
Lindenwood is shooting .429 from the field which ranks them third in the conference and 31st in the whole country. If the team continues on this pace, the percentage will be the fourth highest in program history. The best shooting team in school history was the 1992-93 team, which shot over 46 percent.
Scoring Is Tops
The Lady Lions are averaging 69.7 points a game, which is tops in the HAAC conference. When Lindenwood reaches its scoring average the team is 10-0.
If the team can keep its current scoring average through the end of the year, it will be the second highest average in the history of the program. The 2004-05 team holds the highest scoring average with 69.9 points.
Morgan
Morgan Harrington has become the go to scorer for the Lady Lions. The sophomore from Belleville, Ill. is leading the team in scoring (13.8), assists (2.8), free throw percentage (.871), and three point percentage (.483).
Harrington is also fourth in the country in three point shooting and fourth in free throw percentage.
Dominating The Boards
One thing that has been a constant for the Lady Lions is the way the team rebounds the ball. Lindenwood has outrebounded its opponents in all but five games. When the Lady Lions lead the battle on the boards, they have a record of 13-4. The team has a rebounding margin of +7 which is the highest in the HAAC.
Lindenwood is first in the conference in offensive rebounds a game with an average of 13.9.
Home Court Advantage
Lindenwood has compiled a record of 8-3 in eleven games this season at the Hyland Arena. The Lady Lions program has not finished above .500 at home since the 2008-09 season.
Scouting The Vikings
The Missouri Valley Vikings come into the game with an overall record of 7-17 and a conference mark of 5-7. As of February 8, the Vikings would be the final team to make the HAAC Tournament. Missouri Valley has not played a game since January 29th. Before the layoff the Vikings have won their last two games.
The Vikings are led by Shateah West, who averages 16.3 points a game and a team-high 6.6 rebounds. Hannah Young is second on the team in scoring with 10.3 points and 5.1 rebounds.
Jolene Christensen has been the head women's basketball coach at Missouri Valley College since February 2008.
Scouting The 'Jackets
Graceland has an overall record of 10-13 and a conference mark of 4-10. The Yellowjackets will play MidAmerica Nazarene before coming to St. Charles.
Graceland is the second highest scoring team in the conference, behind the Lady Lions, with an average of 68.1 points a game.
Leading the way for the Yellowjackets is a trio who average over 10 points a game. Josilyn Wilkes is tops in scoring with 15.1 game. Adria Jackson scores 14.7 and Florida Siaosi is averaging 14.
The Ravens are led by interim head coach Rich Harrop.
Scouting The Eagles
The Avila Eagles have an overall record of 14-9 and HAAC mark of 9-5. The Eagles will play Baker before taking on the Lady Lions.
Avila is averaging 64.5 points a game on offense and giving up 62.4 on defense.
The Eagles are led by the top two scorers in the HAAC. Alyson Young is averaging 20.5 points a game and Brittany Townsend is pitching in with 17.1
Larry Williams is in his fifth season as the head women's basketball coach at Avila University.
Last Time
This will be the second time the Lady Lions have played all three of these schools. In the earlier games the Lady Lions compiled a record of 3-0.
In the first matchup against Avila, the Lady Lions won on the road 68-66. Against Graceland, Lindenwood won 60-54, and the team beat Missouri Valley 74-64.
Morgan Harrington averaged 24 points in the three wins.

After the current three-game stretch the Lady Lions will have just three regular season games remaining. To close out the regular season the Lady Lions will have road games against Central Methodist and MidAmerica Nazarene, before closing the season at home against William Jewell.
