For the second straight night, the Lindenwood women's volleyball team played five sets in a match. The Lady Lions were not as fortunate on Wednesday night as their comeback attempt against Maryville at Hyland Arena fell short by scores of 32-30, 25-22, 23-25, 22-25, and 17-15.
The first set saw 24 of the 62 points resulting in either a tie score or a lead change. Lindenwood had two chances to win the set, but both times Maryville tied the score with a kill. With the score tied 30-30, the Lady Lions made two straight errors to give the game to the Saints. Lindenwood appeared poised to take the second set as it led 20-17 at one point. Maryville won eight of the final ten points though to steal the set.
The Lady Lions fought back to take the next two sets. In the third set, Lindenwood used a 5-0 run to take a 13-10 lead, and it never trailed the rest of the way. In the fourth set, the Lady Lions never trailed and were only tied once at 1-1.
In the deciding fifth set, the two teams again battled back and forth with seven ties and two lead changes. Lindenwood led 13-11, but Maryville scored three straight points to get to match point. The Lady Lions killed off two of the Saints' match points, but two straight hitting errors by Lindenwood ended the match.
Both teams had 63 kills in the match, but Lindenwood made seven more hitting errors. Maryville had three more blocks, and Lindenwood had nine more digs and seven more service aces.
Ellen Fandry finished the game with 20 kills and 15 digs.
Kelsey Kennedy added 17 kills and
Kristy Dreisewerd added 12.
Emma Brydels had 30 assists and
Kelsey Biggs had 26. Both
Katie Weber and Biggs had four service aces.
Defensively,
Kaila Schrimpf had 32 digs to lead the Lady Lions. Brydels and Biggs joined Schrimpf and Fandry with double-digit digs. Dreisewerd had a team-high five blocks.
With the loss, Lindenwood fell to 6-6 on the season. The Lady Lions will travel to Illinois-Springfield next Wednesday night for their next contest.
