Storyline
The Lindenwood Lady Lions basketball team's season is over the halfway point and now the team will start a busy week. The Lady Lions will play three games in five days.
It all starts with a home contest against the Harris-Stowe Hornets. The Hornets come to the Hyland Arena riding a five-game winning streak.
After playing Harris-Stowe at home, the team will go back on the road. It starts with a game against the Lindenwood-Belleville Lynx. The Lynx have a record of 10-11 and are on a four-game winning streak.
To close out the busy week, the team will travel to take on the Oakland City Lady Oaks. The Lady Oaks have a record of 7-10.
Last Time Out
The Lindenwood women's basketball team fell to the No. 8 team in NCAA Division II on last Saturday afternoon at Hyland Arena. The Lady Lions lost to Northeastern State by a 67-54 score.
The Lady Lions started off neck-and-neck with the Riverhawks until Lindenwood gave up a 13-1 run to give Northeastern State the advantage at 21-9. Lindenwood would cut into that deficit the rest of the half, but the Riverhawks would still go into the locker room with a 30-24 lead.
The second half started much like the first with Northeastern State extending its lead early on to 41-31. Lindenwood went on a little run and twice cut the deficit to five points, the last time at 44-39. The Lady Lions went cold from the field after that as they went nearly six minutes without a field goal. That allowed Northeastern State to pull away for the victory.
Julie Hlinek led Lindenwood with 13 points, followed by
Marissa Lehnig with 12, and
Morgan Harrington with 11.
Caroline Bourlioux finished with seven points and 12 rebounds, and
Sarah Schnieders had six points and nine boards.
The Lady Lions basketball team will be back in action as they host Northeastern State on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Mo. Tip-off is set to begin at 2 p.m.
Defense Wins Games
Lindenwood's defense has been improving as the season goes along. On the year, the team is allowing just 62.2 points a game. The squad has allowed 70 or more points once over the last 12 games.
Leading Late Equals Win
When the Lady Lions have a lead with less than five minutes to play the team is 8-0. Conversely, the team has only two wins if it is trailing at the five minute mark.
Getting to the Line
The team has been a frequent visitor to the free throw line this season. The Lady Lions have taken 374 free throws compared to their opponents 338. When Lindenwood shoots more free-throws the team is 8-3.
Starting Five
So far in the 2011-12 season, the Lady Lions have used six different starting lineups. The combination of Harrington, Lehnig, Brown, Schnieders, and Bourlioux are 7-1. All other combinations are 3-5.
Halftime Leads
In 11 of the squads 17 games the Lady Lions have held a halftime lead. In those games, Lindenwood is 9-2.
Close Losses
This season, the Lady Lions have played very close in all of their losses. In Lindenwood's six losses this season, only two has come by more than 10 points.
Steady Bourlioux
Sophomore
Caroline Bourlioux has been the one constant in the Lady Lions starting lineup all season long. She has started all 17 of the team's games. She is also third on the team in scoring with 10.6 points and first in rebounds with 6.7.
Spreading it Around
The Lady Lions have done a good job spreading the scoring around this season. In 15 games, there has been six separate leading scorers.
Double Digit Scoring
Nine of the 12 Lady Lions on the roster have had at least one scoring game in double figures. Leading the way is
Sarah Schnieders who has compiled 11, 10+ points scoring games.
Freshman Surprise
Over the past three games, freshman
Julie Hlinak has really turned it on. In those games she is averaging 20 points. She is also shooting 53 percent from the field and 47 percent from behind the arc.
Moving Up the List
Sarah Schnieders is in her third season as a member of the basketball program. With her six blocks this season she has moved into the top 10 list in career blocks at Lindenwood. As of the team's last game, she has recorded 53 blocks which is ninth best all-time.
Opponents Breakdown
This season with the Lindenwood athletics department in a transition year, the team will be taking on a wide range of opponents. The Lady Lions will play 10 NCAA Division II teams, five NAIA teams, and two NCAA Division I teams.
About Harris-Stowe
The Harris-Stowe State Hornets enter the game against the Lady Lions with a record of 5-13. After losing its first 13 games the team has now won five in a row.
As a team, the Hornets average 61.6 points on offense and allows 67.7 on defense. The team is ranked in the top 20 in the NAIA in steals per game.
