Women's Hockey Can't Hold On To Early Lead

The Lindenwood women's ice hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Friday night against Concordia, but the Cobbers scored four unanswered goals and recorded a 4-3 victory over the Lady Lions.

Lindenwood went ahead 1-0 late in the first period when Samantha Redick scored her first goal of the season. Her second goal of 2011-12 came just six minutes later when she tallied a goal early in the second period.

The Cobbers took over the rest of the second period though with three goals. They added another goal less than two minutes into the third period to go up 4-2.

That is how the game stayed until the 59th minute when Alyssa West pulled the Lady Lions within one with a goal with 1:39 left in the contest. Lindenwood had three shots after that but the Concordia goalie made two saves and the final shot attempt went wide.

The difference in the contest came on special teams. Both teams had seven power-play opportunities. Lindenwood was unable to score a power-play goal, while Concordia had three power-play tallies.

Caitlyn Post and West each had assists in the game, and four Lady Lions, Megan Cox, West, Brett Lobreau, and Alison Wickenheiser, were +2 for the contest. Taylor Fairchild made 26 saves in goal. Lindenwood dominated faceoffs by winning 38-of-63. West was 19-of-30 on faceoffs and Kesley Talbot won seven-of-eight.

The same two teams will be back in action on Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. game in Moorhead, Minn.
