Lions Beat Fort Hays 2-1 and Move to Championship Game

Box Score The Lindenwood Lions soccer team beat Fort Hays State 2-1 on Thursday night in Olathe, Kan. in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament.

The first half saw both teams play a very defensive style game. Neither team was able to dent the scoreboard and the contest headed into the break scoreless.

After a scoreless opening half the Lions took just two minutes to score in the second half. Andre Hayne scored his seventh goal of the season after a perfect pass from Ivan Romero.

Fort Hays State started to put pressure on the Lindenwood defense after falling behind, and in the 67th minute the pressure finally paid off. Tomas Mares netted his 11th goal of the season and tied the score.

With the contest tied, Axel Duarte scored the tie breaking goal and sent the Lions into the finals of the tournament.

Fermin Hughes started in net and stopped all but one of the shots he faced. Lindenwood outshot Fort Hays 17-7 which included an 8-2 margin on goal.

With the win the Lions move on to take on Northeastern State in the championship game on Saturday afternoon.
