Lions Use Strong Second Half to Beat Maryville

Box Score The Lindenwood Lions men's basketball team used a huge second half on offense to snap a three-game skid on Saturday afternoon. The Lions outscored the Saints by 11 in the final half to beat Maryville 61-53.

The Lions started the contest falling behind 8-0 in the first four minutes. Finally, at the 14 minute mark Lindenwood got on the scoreboard with a three-pointer by Alex Bazzell. The Saint continued to lead though as the Lions could not get over the hump and take the lead.

With just over two minutes to play Maryville was leading by six. Lindenwood was able to cut into the home team's lead with a quick 6-3 run but still trailed by three at the half.  

The final half started with the Lions trying to battle back into the contest but the Saints had answers for all the Lindenwood runs. The visitors did finally take the lead with 12 minutes to play when Richie Thompson connected on a layup to give the Lions their first lead of the game.

From that point on Lindenwood never trailed again. Down the stretch the Lions closed out the game from the free throw line. In the final 90 seconds Lindenwood was 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.

Bazzell led the way with 22 points and was 15-for-18 from the free throw line. Darris Smith scored 10 points and Richie Thompson also scored 10 and led the team with six rebounds.

After a sluggish first half shooting the ball, the Lions shot 58 percent from the field and 67 percent from behind the arc in the final half. For the game, Lindenwood shot 43 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc.  The Lions won the rebounding battle 35-24 and 10-4 on the offensive glass.

With the win Lindenwood snaps its three-game losing skid and goes to 5-3 on the season. Up next for the Lions is another road game against Missouri S&T.
