Men's Wrestling Defeats Nationally-Ranked Maryville

The Lindenwood men's wrestling team picked up a big dual victory on Wednesday night with a 27-15 road victory over Maryville, the No. 18 team at the NCAA Division II level. Lindenwood won four-of-eight matches on the mat and also benefited from two forfeits by Maryville.

Lindenwood opened the night with a 12-9 victory by Blayne Shockley at 125 pounds. Maryville tied the match with a decision victory at 133 pounds, but the Lions went ahead 9-3 when Craig Chiles received a forfeit at 141 pounds. Maryville came back and took a 12-9 advantage after a decision victory and pin.

Lindenwood took over the match in the higher weight classes. Clayton McFarlane got it started with a 1-0 decision at 165 pounds over the No. 5 ranked NCAA Division II wrestler in that class. The Lions then took the lead for good at 174 pounds when Jacob Johnson won by forfeit. Drae Cox continued Lindenwood's win streak with a decision victory at 184 pounds. After Lindenwood lost at 197 pounds, it sealed the win with an Austin Garza pin at the heavyweight class.

With the win, Lindenwood improves to 4-2 on the season. The Lions are in action again on Feb. 24 at the NCWA Conference Championship.
