Lindenwood roller hockey went 4-0 at the Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association Interregional Tournament in Mount Pleasant, Pa. January 28-29 and was the only team out of the 18 at the event to go undefeated.
In the first game of the weekend on Saturday, the Lions topped Hofstra 6-1. Goaltender Kevin Dwyer stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced and Casey Escarcega led the offense with three goals while Matt Sexton picked up a goal and two assists. Lindenwood jumped out to an early lead in the first period on a power play and never looked back, opening up a 5-0 lead at one point.
The Lions had their hands full in the second game of the day as they escaped with a 6-5 win over Michigan State. Daniel Inouye scored just over two minutes into what would prove to be a back-and- forth first period to give Lindenwood an early 1-0 lead, but the Spartans answered right back with a short-handed goal and a power play goal. The Lions tied the game just 23 seconds later on Inouye's second goal and then took the lead a minute later when Michael Inouye found the back of the net at the 8:16 mark.
Lindenwood appeared to take control of the game in the second as both Daniel and Michael Inouye scored to give the Lions a 5-2 lead, but Michigan State began a comeback with a goal at 11:29 in the period. That rally continued into the third as the Spartans picked up two goals in an 18 second span to knot the game 5-5. Lindenwood answered right back as Sexton scored the game winner with help from Elliott Linton and Cody Kettler.
Brett Humes earned the win at goal stopping 13 of the 18 shots he faced.
In the final game of the day on Saturday, the Lions overwhelmed Towson University 12-5. Lindenwood opened up a 5-1 lead in the first and extended that lead to 10-3 after two periods. The Lions and Tigers traded two goals each in the final frame with Adam Aitken picking up his third goal of the game for the hat trick with just minutes left. Aitken was named the Mission Hockey Player of the Game for his efforts. Dwyer picked up his second win of the day at goal by stopping 16 of the 18 shots the 21 shots he faced.
Lindenwood faced the United States Military Academy at West Point in the final game of the weekend on Sunday and came away with a 7-2 victory. It was a close contest in the first period as the Lions scored twice to take a 2-0 lead, but West Point cut the lead in half at 9:54 with a power play goal. Lindenwood pulled away in the second period as the Lions scored three unanswered goals to open a comfortable 5-1 lead. West Point scored early in the third period, but Lindenwood tallied two goals to put the finishing touches on the win. Humes stopped 16 of 18 shots at goal while Mike Inouye scored a hat trick plus one with four goals for the game. Casey Escarcega had two goals and four assists to help the Lions offense.
Lindenwood roller hockey has a busy stretch this weekend as they have six games scheduled over a three day span in the St. Louis area February 10-12. The weekend starts against the University of Missouri at 8 p.m. Friday at Midwest Sports Hockey in Ballwin, Mo.
