Rethink What You Think About Lindenwood University
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR CURRENT OR RETURNING ATHLETES
COMPLIANCE
What do I need to do as a returning student athlete?
- All returning student athletes will need to have their NCAA Division I amateurism certified through the NCAA eligibility center.
- The compliance office will help provide log in information if you have trouble accessing your account.
Is my place on my team guaranteed for Fall 22?
- Not necessarily. Some teams have a cap on how many athletes they are allowed on the team.
- Coaches will have discussions with every student on their team about what this means for them
If I choose not to return, or don’t have a place on the team, can I transfer?
- Yes. Between your coaches and the athletic department, we want what is best for you. If you want to transfer, we will help you.
- Please speak with your coach about your decision.
- Contact the compliance office for further information on transferring.
- NCAA regulations will still be in play at any institution you transfer to. They will be the ones who certify you.
If I am on athletic scholarship, is that guaranteed for Fall 22?
- Not necessarily. Some teams are limited to how many people on the roster are allowed to have scholarships (head count).
- Coaches will have discussions with every student on their team about what this means for them.
- If it is removed, per NCAA regulations, you do have the right to appeal. Information for that will be provided in your reduction/non-renewal letter from financial aid.
Do I still have 10 full time semesters to play 4 years in my sport?
- Division I has a 5-year clock. That clock starts as soon as someone attends a collegiate institution as a full-time student.
- For returning students who may fall outside that 5-year clock, we will be looking at individual cases to see who may be impacted, and what solutions can be found.
Who should I contact if I have additional compliance questions?
ACADEMICS
How are DI academic eligibility requirements different than DII academic eligibility requirements?
- DII allows for more flexibility in changing your major at any time. While the ASC staff tries to help keep you on a 4-5 year track to graduation, DII rules allow for a much more lenient timeline.
- DI requires student-athletes to stay on a 5-year graduation timeline that begins as soon as a student enrolls fulltime at any college/university.
What do I need to do to be academically eligible under DI rules?
- Maintain good standing (2.0 cumulative GPA for undergraduate, 3.0 cumulative GPA for graduate students)
- Undergraduates: Pass a minimum of 6 credit hours towards your degree each semester
- Undergraduates: Pass a minimum of 18 credit hours toward your degree Fall + Spring
- Undergraduates: Complete a minimum percentage of required credits toward your listed degree:
- Start of 5th fulltime semester: 40% degree completed
- Start of 7th fulltime semester: 60% degree completed
- Start of 9th fulltime semester: 80% degree completed
What could jeopardize my academic eligibility (in addition to not meeting the above standards)?
- If you change your major without checking degree progress, this could jeopardize your ability to meet the above listed PTD % requirements.
- Please check with Casey Finnell or Shawn Nagel before you change your major or minor to determine future eligibility impact.
When will I know if I’m academically eligible?
- The Academic Success Center staff will review all current student-athletes’ academic information by the end of the spring semester. All student-athletes will receive communication from the ASC staff regarding any potential issues.
Who should I talk to if I have additional academic questions?Â
- Casey Finnell (cfinnell@lindenwood.edu) or Shawn Nagel (snagel@lindenwood.edu)
