In what continues to be an unprecedented inaugural season, the men's rugby team advanced to the USA Rugby Division II Championship game with a 57-10 semifinal win over Utah Valley University in Salt Lake City, Utah on Friday. The Lions faced an athletic and bruising Wolverines squad, but used an excellent game plan to pull away for a convincing victory.
Lindenwood put three tries on the board to open up a 21-0 lead after the first half. Tyler Black and Joe Shirley scored the first two and the third came on a penalty try for a dangerous tackle inflicted on Prince Russell.
The Lions were able to wear down the Wolverines in the second half and even emptied the bench with 20 minutes to go to save energy for the final. Black scored his second try of the game and Russell, Stephen Duff, Morgan Findlay, Lincoln Magee, and Tony White crossed the line for Lindenwood.
The Lions will face Salisbury University for the Division II Championship. The Sharks knocked off Towson University 33-12 in the other semifinal match-up. Game time is 2 p.m. (MDT) Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. Fans can follow the game via live streaming.
