The first official MIAA contest in Lindenwood athletics department history was successful as the Lions football team defeated Lincoln on Saturday in Jefferson City, Mo. Lindenwood defeated the Blue Tigers by a 49-28 margin.
Lindenwood played a sloppy first half and led by just a 28-21 margin at halftime. The defense helped turn the game around in the third quarter when it allowed -1 yards of total offense. The offense scored two touchdowns in that period to pull away. The defense ended up allowing just 74 yards in the second half and Lincoln scored just once in the final minute of the game.
Ben Gomez had an impressive debut at quarterback as he threw for 407 yards, the fourth-best single-game total in Lindenwood history. He was 25-of-41 passing and had five touchdown passes, the second-best mark at Lindenwood. Gomez completed passes to eight different players.
Andrew Helmick continued where he left off in 2011 with 108 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Jaron Alexander caught five passes for 68 yards and a score.
Marvin Byrd and
Matt Angell also had touchdown catches.
Denodus O'Bryant led the rushing attack with 75 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively,
Connor Harris had a team-high eight tackles in his first collegiate game.
Joe Day had two of Lindenwood's five sacks and the Lions defense had 13 tackles for loss.
Justin Broome had an interception and a pass breakup.
Lindenwood improves to 1-0 on the season and 1-0 in MIAA play. The Lions will have their home opener next Saturday against Southwest Baptist.
