Box Score The Lindenwood men's soccer team opened 2012 by battling Missouri S&T and a heavy rain storm. The weather conditions neutralized both team's offenses and the Lions had to settle for a 0-0 tie.
Both teams had just three shots on goal in the game and total shots favored Lindenwood by a 14-13 margin. Lions goalie
Fermin Hughes, in his first collegiate game, made three saves and earned a shutout.
Much of the game's excitement came in the second half and overtime periods. Lindenwood had two good scoring chances in the second half. In the 69th minute, Ivan Romero had two chances, the first saved on the goal line by a defender and the second going wide. In the 82nd minute, a header by
Franz Husbands hit the crossbar. Missouri S&T also had a chance late in regulation, but its shot in the 83rd minute hit the post.
After a quiet first overtime period, both teams picked up their offensive chances in the final overtime. The Miners had four shots in the first six minutes of the period, and Lindenwood's
Lukas Martinen had the final shot in the game, but it was saved by the Miners' goalkeeper.
Lindenwood continues play at the Quincy Soccer Bowl on Sunday with a contest against the host school.
