Women's Volleyball Splits On Day Two Of Drury Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lindenwood women's volleyball team wrapped up its opening weekend Saturday with a 3-1 victory against Newman (Kan.) University and a 3-2 loss against host-school Drury (Mo.) University at the La Quinta Inn and Suites Kick-Off Classic in Springfield, Mo.

The Lady Lions struggled off the bat in set one against Newman, allowing the Jets to take the first 25-23 before Lindenwood turned the momentum around. Lindenwood took sets two through four, including a nine-point margin in set two.  The Lady Lions would hold Newman to a .107 hitting percentage while posting a .188 clip of its own.

Freshman Kayla Guyot led the Lady Lions against Newman, collecting 23 kills and seven blocks. Katie Weber and Kelsey Kennedy recorded double-digit kills with 13 and nine, respectively.

Match two proved to be more difficult for the Lady Lions, as Lindenwood and Drury would battle back and forth and take it to a fifth-set. Lindenwood started off strong, taking the Panthers by a seven-point margin in set one. Drury crept back into the match, taking sets two and three. The Panthers had control early of set four, holding a 13-8 lead early, but the Lady Lions came back and took it 27-25. Drury would ultimately gain momentum and hold Lindenwood to eight points in the fifth set.

Freshmen Nicole Hallum and Kristin Burnett led the squad with kills at 13 apiece in match two. Sophomore setter Emma Brydels recorded 41 assists while senior Kaila Schrimpf led the squad with 17 digs.

Guyot started the 2012 season off strong, recording a team-high 50 kills in on the weekend, averaging nearly three kills per set. Brydels tallied 156 assists over the four matches while Schrimpf recorded 75 digs.

The Lady Lions have moved to 3-1 for the season and will take a few days off before heading to Russellville, Ark. for the Arkansas Tech Spikefest on September 7-8.
