Women's Volleyball Captures First MIAA Victory Against Southwest Baptist

Box Score The Lindenwood women's volleyball team defeated Southwest Baptist (Mo.) 3-2 on Tuesday night in Bolivar, Mo. This victory marks the first MIAA victory for the Lady Lions.

The Lady Lions got off to a hot start, taking sets one and two by a 10 and six-point margin, respectively. The only lead that the Lady Lions relinquished was the first point of the opening set. Lindenwood proceeded to rattle off the next six points and never look back.

Set two was a bit of a see-saw affair in the beginning, until the Lady Lions rallied five straight points to jump to a 10-6 lead. After that, the Bearcats would only get within one before Lindenwood would jump ahead and take the set.

Lindenwood as a team hit .266 in the first two sets, while recording 30 total kills between the two and only nine errors.

Sets three and four told a different tale, as Southwest Baptist would take set three, 26-24 and set four 25-18.  Lindenwood battled off one set point in the third, but the Bearcats scored the next two points to capture set three.  Both teams struggled offensively in the fourth, with Southwest Baptist hitting at a .114 clip while the Lady Lions were just below .024. At one point in the fourth, Lindenwood was down 14-4 before going on a 7-2 to cut the lead to 16-11 but that was as close as the visitors would get.

The fifth was similar to set three, a true back-and-forth contest. The Lady Lions were down 14-11 and fought off two set points in the midst of scoring five straight to take the set 16-14 that ended with a kill by freshman Kayla Guyot.

Four Lady Lions recorded double-digit kills, let by senior Erin Anselman with 16. Kelsey Kennedy recorded 14 while Guyot and Katie Weber recorded 13 and 12. Setter Emma Brydels recorded a career-high 53 assists. Senior libero Kaila Schrimpf led all players with 25 digs.

Lindenwood improves to 6-6 for the year, and 1-3 in conference action. The team continues its road streak by traveling to St. Joseph, Mo. this Saturday for a match-up against conference opponent Missouri Western. The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
