The Lindenwood women's ice hockey team lost a defensive battle on Friday night at the Lindenwood Ice Arena. The Lady Lions fell to Syracuse in a CHA match by a 2-1 margin.
Lindenwood outshot the Orange 11-10 in the opening period but trailed 1-0 after Julie Knerr scored with an assist from Nicole Renault less than six minutes into the game.
The Lady Lions tied the game at the 14:42 mark of the second period. Lindenwood had a five-on-three advantage but Syracuse killed the first penalty off. With just four seconds left in the power play, there was a scramble in front of the net and
Kendra Broad punched it for the Lady Lions.
Lyndsay Kirkham and
Chelsea Witwicke received assists on the goal.
Shots were nearly even after two periods, but Syracuse took over in the third period, outshooting Lindenwood 15-4. Lindenwood had three penalties in the first 10 minutes of the period which helped the Orange gain momentum. Syracuse did not score on a power play but did get an even-strength goal at the 4:26 mark when Melissa Piacentini put one in the back of the net.
Lindenwood held its second straight opponent without a power-play goal as Syracuse was 0-for-six in the game. The Lady Lions could only score on one-of-six chances with the man advantage. The Orange finished the contest with a 41-29 edge in shots.
Taylor Fairchild helped Lindenwood stay close by making saves on 39 of 41 shots.
Alyssa West had a team-high five shots, and
Katie Erickson and
Brett Lobreau both blocked two shots.
Lindenwood and Syracuse conclude their series on Saturday afternoon in a 2 p.m. contest at the Lindenwood Ice Arena.
