Box Score In a battle of two of the top three teams in the MIAA, the No. 19 Lindenwood Lions held off the No. 14 Fort Hays State Tigers 4-3 on Thursday night in St. Charles.
Andre Hayne led the Lions with a pair of goals including a goal worthy of ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10.
Fort Hays jumped out to the lead at the 16 minute mark when Ricardo Yeverino scored his first of two goals. Lindenwood answered right back just three minutes later when Hayne scored his first of the night off a perfect feed from
Mauricio Medina. That would be the only scoring of the opening half.
The final 45 minutes was full of offense. The first goal was scored nine minutes in, which gave the Tigers the lead back at 2-1. That lead lasted all of 43 seconds when
Rodney Mays scored his first of the season to tie the score.
Then 14 minutes later Hayne scored an unreal goal to give the home team its first lead of the game. Hayne received a perfect back heel pass from Tiago Pereira which led to Hayne single handily dribbling between three Tiger defenders and burying a shot in the upper corner. With the crowd of almost 400 still buzzing, Medina netted another Lindenwood goal to give the Lions a 4-2 lead. The goals came just one minute apart.
Even though the Tigers were trailing by two goals the visitors responded. Fort Hays scored on a free kick to get within one with just over 14 minutes to play in the game. The Lions defense held and Lindenwood continued its unbeaten season and earned a huge conference win.
Fermin Hughes started in the net and made five saves in the win.
With the win the Lions improve to 8-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in MIAA play. Up next for Lindenwood is a home game Saturday night against Southern Nazarene.
