Box Score Beating the University of Missouri-St. Louis was going to be a tall task for Lindenwood because the Tritons have a veteran starting lineup and they were coming off a 59-52 exhibition win against Division I Saint Louis University.
Senior
Caroline Bourlioux scored 18 points and had six rebounds but it wasn't enough for the Lady Lions to overcome a second-half run by UM-St. Louis, a 70-58 winner in its season-opener Saturday.
Bourlioux's 69 career starts are by far the most on the Lady Lions, who replaced half of their roster from a year ago. The 6-foot forward from Belgium stood tall against the Tritons' defense and helped the Lady Lions (1-2) outscore them 30-28 in the paint.
But missed chances around the rim on offense and allowing the Tritons second chances on offense after missed free throws and layups helped undo the Lady Lions fast start in the second half. The Tritons led the Lady Lions 29-26 at halftime, but sophomore
Dru Haertling scored the first basket of the second half, with an assist by sophomore
Jenny Rocha, and junior
Morgan Johnson gave the Lady Lions their first lead of the game (31-29) with a three-point basket .
The Tritons' win was similar to last year's against the Lady Lions. In their previous meeting, the game was tied five times and there were nine lead changes. The lead only changed twice Saturday, but the Lady Lions only trailed by two points with 6:53 to play.
UM-St. Louis boasts four senior starters. Senior Alyssa Like led the Tritons with 18 points. Senior Hazaria Washington scored 15 for the Tritons, and Triton senior Devonna Smith had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Lindenwood cooled off some from the field. The Lady Lions were shooting 48.8 percent after their first two games, but dipped below 40 percent (38.2) against the Tritons. Haertling scored 11 points and senior
Marissa Lehnig had 11 points off the bench. Lehnig has scored in double figures in all three games.
The Lady Lions play their home opener Tuesday against McKendree (Ill.). Tip off is at 5 p.m. It's the first of a six-game homestand for the Lady Lions.
