Women's Hockey Falls Late In Season Opener

Box Score postgame quotes

The Lindenwood women's ice hockey team allowed a late goal on Friday evening which caused the team to fall 3-2 in its season opener against Bemidji State.

Special teams played a key role in the first two periods as both teams scored a pair of power-play goals. Bemidji State scored first less than 10 minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Lindenwood's Jocelyn Slattery then scored twice in a three-minute span, both coming on tip-ins in front of the goal. The first was at the 17:48 mark of the first period, with assists from Brooke Peden and Kendra Broad. The second was less than a minute into the second period and was assisted by Peden and Chelsea Witwicke.

Lindenwood held the lead for eight minutes until the Beavers tied the game with their second power-play goal. The two programs then went nearly 30 minutes without a goal. The Lady Lions had two power-play chances in the third but could get off only one shot on goal. The Beavers took advantage and scored the game-winner with just 1:20 left in the contest.

The Lady Lions outshot the Beavers in the first period but Bemidji State ended the game with a 39-20 advantage on shots. Most of that came in the second period when Bemidji State outshot Lindenwood 23-6. Nicole Hensley stopped 36 shots in goal for Lindenwood.

Lindenwood and Bemidji State will continue their series tomorrow evening at 6:54 p.m. at the St. Peters Rec-Plex.
