Box Score The Lindenwood's women's basketball team upset No. 8 Washburn University 70-64 Saturday afternoon in St. Charles. The Lady Lions rode a stand out performance by Kassisdy Gengenbacher, who finished with 28 to earn their first conference win of the season.
Lindenwood's defense is what helped the topple Washburn, forcing the Ichabods to shoot 35 percent from the field against Lindenwood's 43 percent.
The Lady Lions went into halftime with a 31-29 lead. Lindenwood started the second half with a three by Gengenbacher to push its advantage up to five. After the Ichabods got within one the Lady Lions scored five straight points to lead by six.
But then right back came the Icahabods going on a 12-2 run to recapture the lead. Over the next five minutes of game play, Washburn would continue to lead but the Lady Lions would not go away.
With 2:54 to go the Ichabods held a two-point lead. Gengenbacher would tie the score up with a layup and the Lady Lions took over from there.
Jonna Raflund and
Bri Wilber connected on layups on back-to-back possesions and that was all the Lady Lions needed to hold on for the upset win.
Jenny Rocha was the Lady Lions second leading scorer with 12 points.
Vanessa Zailo had five points, but added 15 rebounds.
Bre Zanders and
Beth Maenpaa both contributed eight points each on a combined eight-of-10 shooting from the field.
Lindenwood improved its record to 7-3 overall and 1-3 in MIAA play. The Lady Lions will have some time off for the holidays and will be back in action on Jan. 3rd at Pittsburg State.
