Lady Lions shoot their way to conference road win

Box Score All eight Lindenwood women's basketball players who took a shot in Tuesday's MIAA game against Southwest Baptist shot at least 50 percent from the field.

For the second straight game, the Lady Lions shot at least 55 percent from the field and they beat the Bearcats in Bolivar, Mo. 94-82. After shooting 55 percent in Saturday's 72-60 home win over Missouri Western, the Lady Lions shot 55.6 percent against the Bearcats.

"We talked a lot today before the shoot around, and I put some numbers up on the board," Lindenwood coach Tony Francis said. "Honestly, I didn't think we'd played with a lot of confidence. I asked the girls, what's going to happen when we start clicking on all cylinders?"

The Lady Lions are 2-0 against the Bearcats this season and improved to 12-10 overall and 7-8 in the conference. The Bearcats fell to 9-12, 4-10. Three of the Lady Lions' last four regular-season games are at Hyland Arena in St. Charles. With wins in their past two games, the Lady Lions vastly improved their chances at playing in the MIAA Tournament next month.

It was the first game the Lady Lions scored more than 80 points since they beat Washburn 85-80 Dec. 22. Their season-high for points this season is 106, against Robert Morris Nov. 26.

Four Lady Lions scored in double figures. Sophomore guard Jenny Rocha scored a career-high 20 points to lead them. Rocha's previous career high in points was 18, also against the Bearcats.

"We pulled Jenny aside and talked to her about her aggressiveness because that opens up everything for everybody else," Francis said. "We want to keep her confident."

Freshman Kassidy Gengenbacher upped her team-high scoring average to 14.6 with 19 points. Junior Morgan Johnson made 5 of 6 three-point baskets and finished with 17 points. Senior Caroline Bourlioux grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and scored 14 points.

Senior Marissa Lehnig scored nine points, had six rebounds and four steals for the Lady Lions.

Southwest Baptist sophomore Brook Duncan, who leads the Bearcats in scoring, poured in a game-high 28 points. The Bearcats' second leading scorer, senior forward Jacqui Zelenka, had 12 points and eight rebounds, but she picked up her fourth foul with under 5:00 to play.

"Her and Duncan are big parts of their offense," Francis said. "When one of them has to come out, that helps us quite a bit. We were struggling defensively. They mixed up their offense well. They'd attack and we didn't guard the ball well."

The game was closely contested in the first half, and Rocha's layup with two seconds left gave the Lady Lions a 41-39 lead at the break. Johnson's three-point basket with 11:44 left in the game, gave the Lady Lions a 69-52 lead, their largest of the game.

"We want to build off this and stay humble," Francis said. "We want to stay hungry. The kids know it."

The Lady Lions return home Saturday to meet Central Missouri (18-3, 12-2). The Jennies are ranked 12th in the country. The Lady Lions beat the Jennies 65-64 Jan. 25.
