Box Score For the second straight game, the Lindenwood women's hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period and then held on for a victory. On Saturday, the Lady Lions did it in University Park, Pa. during a 2-1 victory over Penn State.
The Lady Lions got on the board first when
Alyssa West scored at the 9:27 mark of the first period. Just over three minutes later,
Caitlyn Post scored a power-play goal to put Lindenwood up 2-0.
That proved to be enough for Lindenwood's defense. Penn State scored one time early in the second period, but goalie
Nicole Hensley did not allow another goal in the game. Hensley was especially sharp in the final period when Penn State outshot Lindenwood 21-4. The Nittany Lions final chance came when they went on the power play at the 17:54 mark and took eight shots. Two were wide of the net, two were blocked, and Hensley handled the other four to preserve the victory.
Carrie Atkinson assisted on West's goal, and
Chelsea Witwicke and
Katie Erickson received assists on the power-play score. West was a +1 for the game and had a team-high seven shots. Hensley finished with 45 saves.
Lindenwood and Penn State will be in action again on Sunday with a noon faceoff.
