Football Drops Home Opener To No. 8 Pittsburg State

Box Score The Lindenwood football team dropped its home opener on Thursday night at Hunter Stadium by a 38-7 score to No. 8 Pittsburg State.
 
For the second straight week, the Lions fell behind by a 17-0 score in the first quarter. This time, Lindenwood was unable to dig out of an early hole. The Gorillas would go on to lead 31-0 at halftime and 38-0 at the end of three quarters. The Lions scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the final score.
 
Pittsburg State dominated the statistics as it outgained Lindenwood by a 476-219 margin in total offense. The Lions committed only two turnovers in the game, including an interception late in the second quarter that was returned for a 98-yard touchdown.
 
Team leaders on defense for the Lions included Steven Pace with seven tackles, Dillon Hawkins with two tackles for loss, Jeremy Morris with two pass breakups, and Brian Hawthorne with the team's only sack.
 
On offense, Stephen Kaiser had the team's only touchdown with a 14-yard rushing score with 3:01 left in the game. Jaron Alexander was the most productive skill player, having 60 receiving yards and averaging 20.0 yards per catch.
 
Game Notes: Lindenwood falls to 1-1 on the season … Pittsburg State improves to 2-0 on the year … the Lions saw an 11-game winning streak in their home openers snapped … Pittsburg State improved its road winning streak to 15 games … the Lions are now 1-2 all-time against Pittsburg State … the Lions are 1-6 against nationally-ranked teams since moving to the NCAA Division II level, including 0-3 against top-10 teams … Lindenwood is on the road next week with a Sept. 20 game at Fort Hays State.
