Defense Stands Strong, but Lady Lions Fall to No. 10 UCM, 1-0

Box Score In a rematch that the Lindenwood women's soccer team was looking to redeem an early season loss to Central Missouri, the Lady Lions fell just short Friday night as they fell 1-0 at Hunter Stadium.

Central Missouri controlled the first 20 minutes of the game, outshooting Lindenwood 6-1 in that time frame. With the defense holding, the Lady Lions tried to build some momentum and get some offense going. Kat Roe and Alexis Robbers each attempted a shot just outside the box, but Jennie's goalkeeper Ana Dilkes saved them both. As the Jennies drove down the field soon after, there was a scuffle in the Lindenwood box after UCM's Jada Scott sent the ball in from the outside. Lady Lions' goalkeeper Jordan Gnolfo saved the initial shot attempt, but Central Missouri's Julie Ireland put away the rebound for her 12th goal of the season to give the Jennies a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.

Both offenses stalled the rest of the half with each team getting just one more shot a piece before the whistle sounded.

The Lady Lions held with Central Missouri in the second half, but saw nearly no offense. The Jennies possessed the ball most of the half, receiving eight corner kicks compared to Lindenwood's two. UCM also nailed six shots, but Gnolfo turned them all away. With Lindenwood standing strong on the Jennies several opportunities, the Lady Lions tried to make a run with under a minute remaining, but failed to control the ball to give themselves a good chance to tie the match and send it into overtime.

The final whistle blew, and the No. 10 team in the country defeated the Lady Lions 1-0 in the last women's soccer match of the season at Lindenwood.

Ireland led the Jennies with three shots on goal, while Roe led Lindenwood with three shots. Gnolfo saved seven shots off the feet of UCM.

The Lindenwood Ladies drop to 5-8-4 on the season, with a 3-5-2 mark in MIAA play. Heading into the night, the Lady Lions led a three-way tie for the final spot in the conference tournament with Nebraska-Kearney and Washburn. When this match became final, Nebraska-Kearney had already dropped a 1-0 battle to Fort Hays, and Washburn was tied with Emporia State in the first half.

The Lady Lions return to action in their final match of the regular season on Sunday afternoon when they head to Northwest Missouri State for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
