Box Score Two first-half goals by Upper Iowa proved costly for the Lindenwood men's soccer team Saturday night, as the Lions dropped a key conference match 2-1 at Hunter Stadium.
It didn't take long for Upper Iowa to gain the upper-hand, scoring less than two minutes into the match when Sebastian Smith knocked a ball in the net after a scuffle which saw Lindenwood goalkeeper
Andrew Hamerlinck hit the initial shot away. Â The Lions controlled the rest of the half until the Peacocks' Leandro Pena took advantage of a defensive mishap on the part of Lindenwood and dribbled into the box before shooting it right past Hamerlinck into the corner to give Upper Iowa a 2-0 lead after 37 minutes. Lindenwood received a couple more opportunities, with a couple corner kicks, but were unable to capitalize on its chances before halftime.
Â
Despite the Lions still bringing the pressure, the guys in gold couldn't put it past the Upper Iowa keeper. Then in the 63rd minute on a corner opportunity,
Eduardo Spragge Campo took the kick and found the foot of
Alfredo Paez on the other end to shrink the Upper Iowa lead to 2-1.
Â
With just five minutes left in the match, Upper Iowa's Dominic Boland received his second yellow card, which results in a red card and automatic ejection. Now up a man, the Lions dialed up the pressure more. Getting one more corner kick, Lindenwood's
Jeremy Tutas got a shot, but missed wide. Time ran out and Upper Iowa celebrated a win that saw them go to the top of the MIAA standings.
Â
With the loss, Lindenwood drops to 8-6-2, and 4-2-1 in the MIAA. The Lions final contest of the season is November 8 when they travel to Fort Hays State in a potential conference-deciding match.
