The Lindenwood women's ice hockey team played to a tie with the Penn State Nittany Lions 1-1 on Saturday night from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.
The Lady Lions and Nittany Lions began their second game in two nights slowly with each team playing cautiously. After failing to capitalize on an early power play opportunity, Lindenwood broke through with the first goal of the night at the 10:40 mark of the period. The goal was scored by
Britannia Gillanders, her third goal of the season with the assists being credited to
Katie Nokelby and
Rachel Weich. For Nokelby the assist was her fourth of the season, and fourth in the last two games. The Lady Lions closed out the period in strong fashion and headed to the intermission with the lead, 1-0.
The score would hold at 1-0 for the duration of the second period despite the Lady Lions being outshot for the period 13-6.
The Nittany Lions would carry their second period momentum into the third period, and tie the game just 4:02 into the period. The goal was scored by Micayla Catanzariti and assisted by Emily Laurenzi. Both teams sent 12 shots on goal during the period, however neither team was able to breakthrough and the game headed to overtime.
In the five-minute overtime period, the Lady Lions dominated play by sending eight shots on goal to the Nittany Lions one. Penn State goalie Celine Whitlinger was up for the challenge and saved all eight shots sent her way. With neither team being able to score, the game ended in a 1-1 tie. In net for Lindenwood,
Nicole Hensley provided a stable force between the pipes, making 31 saves while allowing the one goal against.
In the end, the Lady Lions held the advantage in shots 36-32. On special teams, the Lady Lions failed to score on their three power play attempts while also successfully killing off the two Nittany Lion power plays.
With the tie the Lady Lions move their season record to 3-4-1 and 1-0-1 within the CHA. Following the tie, the Nittany Lions move their season record to 3-6-1 and 0-1-1 during conference play. Lindenwood will return to action on Friday night when they host the Syracuse Orange from Lindenwood Ice Arena for their annual Pink the Rink night at 7 p.m.
