Lady Lions Offense Stalls in 77-69 Loss

The Lindenwood women's basketball team lost its final game of a five-game road trip to Quincy University by a final of 77-69 on Sunday afternoon in Quincy, Ill.
 
The Lady Lions fell behind 6-2 early on, but a CeCe Rapp field goal pulled the Lady Lions within two, and Charisse Williams tied the game up with back-to-back free throws.  Lindenwood took its first lead of the game on a Kylie Ferguson three-pointer, giving the Lady Lions a 14-13 lead with just 2:33 remaining in the first quarter.  Kassidy Gengenbacher scored the final eight points of the first quarter for the Lady Lions to give Lindenwood a 24-21 lead.
 
The second quarter started off in favor of the Hawks, but the Lady Lions caught back up halfway through the second frame.  After back-to-back three-pointers by Bri Wilber and Gengenbacher, the Lady Lions held a 31-29 lead with just over five minutes to play.  Quincy outplayed Lindenwood for the final five minutes of the first half as it was in control with a 40-31 lead at the break.
 
Quincy continued its strong defense and did not allow Lindenwood to score until the 6:15 mark of the third quarter.  The Lady Lions were scoreless for nearly nine minutes in which Quincy rallied for a 20-0 run.  Gengenbacher tried to spark a comeback as she hit three three-point buckets to close out the third quarter, but Lindenwood was still down by 14 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
The Lady Lions could not stop the Hawks from scoring in the final quarter.  Quincy continued to hold a double-digit lead until back-to-back free throws by Gengenbacher pulled the Lady Lions within nine.  Jenny Rocha brought Lindenwood within two points with 1:28 remaining, but Quincy held on for a 77-69 win over Lindenwood.
 
Gengenbacher nailed six three-pointers in the game and ended with a total of 29 points.  Gengenbacher is now fifth in school history for three-pointers made, and she also ranks fifth in free throws made.  Rocha finished with 13 points, two steals, and two assists, while Williams tallied 10 points, five steals, one assist, and three rebounds.  Gengenbacher and Williams were named to the all-tournament team.
 
The Hawks won the battle on the boards with 39 rebounds to 29 for the Lady Lions.  Quincy shot 45.8 percent from the field, while Lindenwood shot 38.6 percent.
 
With the loss, Lindenwood falls to 3-2 on the year.  The Lady Lions will have their home opener on Tuesday against McKendree for a 12 p.m. start in Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Mo.
