The Lindenwood baseball team hit five homeruns to defeat Montevallo 19-4 on Friday afternoon.Â
The Lions had a back-and-forth game against the Falcons which started with a quick 1-0 lead for Montevallo in the first inning.Â
Mike Wilson tied the game up with a single to right center to drive in
Drew Quinones in the second inning. The third inning started off with
Nathan Prindle and
Mike Ehrhard getting plunked on back-to-back at-bats to set up
Wade Rothermich for the three-run blast to right center, giving the Lions a 4-1 lead. The Flacons responded with three runs of their own on four hits in the bottom of the inning.
Lindenwood continued its strong day at the plate and regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning with a lead-off home run to left field by
Nathan Prindle. Rothermich added his second long ball of the day to give Lindenwood a two-run advantage. The Lions added more runs in the sixth inning including a
Wes Degener bunt single allowing
Branden Sugar to score and later
Zac Perkins scored from third base on a
Shawn Hagarty sacrifice fly.
Offense was not an issue for the Lions today as they continued to pound the ball late in the game.  In the eighth inning, Degener belted a two-run shot over the centerfield wall and increasing the Lions lead to 10-4. Prindle followed with a double to left center and later moved to third base. After
Ryan Light was hit by a pitch and stole second base, Rothermich hit a two-out ground-rule-double to drive in both Prindle and Light for a 12-4 Lindenwood lead.
The Lions continued to pile on the runs in the ninth inning as Perkins reached on an error and Degener reached base via walk. Prindle hit his second home run of the game as this one came with three RBI and the merry-go-round was active. Hagarty was hit by a pitch and scored on a Light double to center. Light scored on a Rothermich triple down the right field line and Quinones drove in Rothermich on a single up the middle. Quinones advanced to second on a groundout and scored as Wilson reached on a fielding error by the Falcons third baseman. The Lions finished the top of the ninth inning with seven runs to make it a 19-4 game.
Will Spitzfaden finished his day on the mound allowing four runs on seven hits and two strikeouts in six innings pitched.Â
Connor Law came in for the starter and tossed two innings allowing just one run and struck out four Flacon batters.Â
Brennan Hehner finished the game for the Lions with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Rothermich, Prindle, and Degener were a combined 10-for-16 with five homeruns, one triple, two doubles, and 14 RBI. The trio helped the Lions to a 19-4 victory over Montevallo.
Lindenwood improves to 3-5 on the year. The Lions will complete the three-game Montevallo Classic on Saturday starting with Albany State at 11 a.m. and game two will be against Saint Leo and is slated to start at 6 p.m.
