The No. 20 ranked Lindenwood men's soccer team defeated the Maryville University Saints, 1-0 in a non-conference clash on Wednesday evening from Hunter Stadium.
Â
From the matches opening whistle, the Lions were able to sustain pressure on the Saints end of the field. Over the course of the first-half Lindenwood fired nine shots towards the Maryville net, however, only two were on goal and both were turned away by the Saints keeper. The teams entered into halftime knotted up at 0-0. The second-half brought much of the same for the Lions, who continued to have their efforts thwarted by an admirable Saints defense. Ultimately, Lindenwood would see their hard work pay off in the 65th minute.
Alfredo Paez pounced on a loose ball inside the box and fired it into the back of the net, tying him for the team-lead in goals with three on the year. The assist was credited to
Eduardo Spragge Campo, his second helper of the season. Although the Lions attack continued through the end of the match, they were unable to add any breathing room to their lead, with the final score ending 1-0.
Aleksa Nenadic made his first-career start in net for Lindenwood, making two saves en route to the shutout victory.
Nijaz Muratovic led the way for Lindenwood with four shots.
Â
In the end, the Lions held the advantage in shots (15-3), shots on goal (7-2) and corner kicks (9-0). The Saints led the match in saves (6-2).
Â
With the win, Lindenwood improves their season record to 3-1-1 on the season. The Lions will begin a stretch of five consecutive road matches on Thursday, September 24th when they travel to Tahlequah, Okla. to battle Northeastern State at 7 pm. The match will be the Lions first of eight MIAA conference matches throughout the season.Â
