Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker

The Lindenwood Lady Lions dropped a thriller 2-1 to Washburn in the first MIAA match of the season on Friday in St. Charles.

Washburn looked to be in control early getting off the first three shots of the period in the first 20 minutes. Just seconds after a pair of Lindenwood defensive substitutions, Washburn's Sara Specht controlled the ball at the top of the box. The midfielder passed to the left of the 18, and found Michelle Keleher who shot it just passed Lindenwood goalkeeper Jordon Gnolfo. The Lady Lions found their chance in the last 10 minutes of the first half, getting off two shots, but failed to capitalize on the opportunity.

Lindenwood wasted no time in the second half, taking control of the ball off a failed Washburn corner kick. The Lady Lions dribbled the ball downfield when the Ichabods attempted to knock it away. A loose ball ensued, and Kristin Brewer knocked it forward to find Alexis Robbers who shot it in the bottom of the net to tie the score at one each. The match went back and forth for most of the second half, then Lindenwood began taking control, outshooting Washburn 6-1 in the half alone. The Lady Lions had two shots, including a corner, in the final five minutes, but Washburn stood its ground and forced overtime.

The first overtime period saw much of how the second half ended, with Lindenwood racking up opportunities. The Lady Lions were unable to knock one in, even getting a shot off with under a minute remaining. Just as the half was about to be whistled over, Washburn's Rebecca Weimer was too aggressive playing the ball and knocked down Lindenwood's Becky Roberts, receiving a yellow card.

The second half was a stalemate, with each team exchanging fouls. Ichabods midfielder Paige Swanson found an opening with almost a minute remaining and shot it over the outstretched arms of Gnolfo to give Washburn the win in double-overtime.

Lindenwood falls to 1-4-2 on the season, and now 0-1-0 in MIAA play. The Lady Lions host Emporia State on Sunday at 12 p.m.
